The first Monday of May is here, which means it's time for the 2019 Met Gala to kick off and we can't wait!
The Met Gala (otherwise known at the Costume Institute Gala) takes place annually at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City and signals the opening of the Costume Institute’s themed annual fashion exhibition.
Every year the Met Gala’s exclusive guest list draws an eyebrow-raising throng of around 550 A-listers. And when we say A-listers, we mean those of the A+++ pedigree.
It’s also the *most* spectacular red carpet of the year. Yes, the beauty inspo on the recent Oscars’ red carpet was gorgeous (as always!), but the Met Gala is where creativity is encouraged and imagination runs rampant. This is because guests are invited to dress in their interpretation of each year’s exhibition theme.
Last year’s Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination themed gala delivered some of the most breathtaking beauty inspo we’ve seen yet – anyone else still swooning over Lily Collins’ bejewelled smoky eye?
This year’s theme is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on Camp and while we were holding our breath in anticipation, pondering what weird and wonderful looks would be unveiled on the red carpet, we lapped up all of the details on how celebs prepared for fashion's night of nights.
From facials to workouts and just plain old taking it easy, here’s how this year’s Met Gala attendees have been prepping for the big event.
Miley Cyrus
It seems Miley Cyrus spent part of her Sunday getting in one last workout with hubby Liam Hemsworth before the big event. She uploaded a mirror selfie of herself in sweats and a crop top, with the photo titled “pre Met workout with bae”.
She followed up the Instagram story by then sharing what we’re wondering is a preview of her hair look for the big event?!
Sara Sampaio
Portuguese model/actress Sara Sampaio visited Soma Spa for a facial that had MANY components. First there was microdermabrasion, then came a customised rose-gold mask. All that was topped off with facial acupuncture by health guru Juhi Singh and a 24-karat gold treatment to hydrate and brighten Sara’s skin – so extra! Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech also paid a visit to Soma Spa and indulged in the gold mask treatment, too.
Winnie Harlow
Geez, was every celeb at Soma Spa over the weekend? Winnie Harlow also swung by the New York spa for a diamond jelly mask. The mask is actually so pretty (and sparkly!) that we’re feeling it could almost be a red carpet beauty look itself.
Camila Mendes
Camila Mendes uploaded a selfie while her skin was treated to the Purple Ray™ Facial at celebrity facialist Tracie Martyn’s skin studio. This facial combines red LED lights with blue light to clear blemishes and speed up the skin’s regeneration process in one hit.
Joan Smalls
Joan Smalls popped into Johanna Czech’s skin studio in New York for some pre-Met Ball skin love. It’s unclear exactly which treatment Joan opted for, but what we could see is that it involved LED light and it must have been pretty darn good as Joan shared an Instagram Story about the facial captioned “in heaven at the moment”. The supermodel also tagged Augustinus Bader - clueing us in on the products that were used.
Amber Valletta
Amber Valletta also hit up Johanna Czech and indulged in a facial that looked seriously science fiction worthy. From the Instagram story Amber shared, it looks like she may have had one of Czech’s Enhanced LED Facials – a bespoke facial that combines a wide range of treatments including micro-puncture, cryo-infusion, serums and masks.
Lily Aldridge
Lily Aldridge checked in to see Brazilian massage therapist Flávia Lanini for some “sculpting head to toe”. Lanini’s lymphatic drainage massage is a fave with many of the Victoria’s Secret Angels to sculpt the body pre-show and reduce swelling.
