Flowers with anti-ageing powers
These blooms aren’t just a feast for the eyes—they could also hold the secret to younger skin
These blooms aren’t just a feast for the eyes—they could also hold the secret to younger skin
In the last 20 years, science has produced a plethora of potent anti-agers that claim to fix every complexion imperfection under the sun. But natural treatments have come a long way too, and certain flowers have proven to be powerful, potent ingredients that deliver anti-ageing results.
The new breed of flower-based anti-agers boast a bevy of benefits, according to naturopath Emily Bradley. “Blooms contain antioxidants, which prevent free radical damage; vitamins A and C, which promote healing and cell renewal; and natural moisturisers such as essential fatty acids that keep skin soft and supple.”
Chamomile: Calms irritation
We all know the calming effects of a cuppa, but these baby blooms also comfort the skin. So how does it work? Chamomile contains bisabolol, an extract thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and which is often used in skin care.
Try:
Darphin Organic Chamomile Aromatic Care instantly balances a pink and irritated complexion. Apply it in the evening, between cleansing and your night cream.
Eminence Calm Skin Chamomile Moisturiser is a naturally soothing cream that also happens to contain calendula and bacteria-busting arnica flower.
Weil for Origins Night Health Bedtime Face Cream relaxes the mind with a blend of chamomile and lavender for a better night’s sleep, while buckbean and St Paul’s wort extracts act on fine lines.
Calendula: Reduces redness
When skin looks red or inflamed, it’s time to call on calendula. This potent ingredient contains astringent tannins, which “help knit tissue together and fight infection-causing microbes”, says Tipper Lewis of Neal’s Yard Remedies.
Try:
Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist replenishes moisture and calms sensitive skin with one quick spray.
Ren Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream soothes, hydrates and fights off chronic inflammation.
Weleda Calendula Weather Protection Cream calms down red, especially caused by the cold, wind, and harsh weather.
Rose: Smooths and firms
The rosehip is a rich source of retinoic acid or vitamin A. Just like synthetic retinol treatments, rosehip accelerates skin cell turnover, but in a natural way. “This effective antioxidant both promotes cell renewal and protects skin against damage, leading to a healthier, more resilient complexion,” says Bradley.
Try:
Kosmea Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil is pure, has a lovely texture and definitely doesn’t cost the earth.
Neal’s Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm features a huge helping of wild rosehip seed oil, partnered with nourishing jojoba oil and beeswax.
By Terry Cellularose Hydraradiance Mask is enriched with rose extracts to nourish skin.
Cornflower: Soothes puffy eyes
This bright blue bloom has long been a natural remedy for a host of eye issues. Even today, practitioners of natural medicine treat conjunctivitis with a cornflower eyewash, and thanks to their diuretic properties, cornflowers can deflate puffy, under-eye pouches.
Try:
A'kin White Tea & Cornflower Eye Day Gel is a good all-rounder that targets under-eye bags, dark circles and puffiness.
Sisley Gentle Eye and Lip Make-up Remover is a beautiful blend of softening cornflower, soothing orange blossom and hydrating gardenia.
Natio Eye Contour Treatment Gel with cornflower, cucumber, chamomile and calendula is the perfect morning treatment, targeting puffiness and dark circles.
Echinecea: Clears acne
It’s not just a condition for teenagers; adult acne is a reality for many Australians over 40. But before drying them out with a bucket load of benzoyl peroxide, echinacea is a more natural solution worth trying. This tiny plant has long been considered an acne treatment as it fights infection and stimulates the lymphatic system.
Try:
Dr Hauschka Clarifying Toner is an antibacterial astringent that balances oily or blemish-prone skin.
Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Cream is an anti-inflammatory yet nourishing cream to replenish skin’s energy.
Trilogy Balancing Gel Cleanser whisks away impurities and balances oily and combination skin types.
