The blue eye makeup trend is more wearable than you think

Maybe it’s the fact we were in the midst of a global pandemic with a lot of time on our hands, but the past few years have provided a string of outlandish eye makeup trends.

From reverse cat eye eyeliner to a kaleidoscope of coloured eye makeup, we’ve easily painted our lids yellow, pink and green in just the last six months alone. 

And now, amidst the chaos, we’re reverting back to an eye makeup colour we thought we’d left in the ‘80s – blue eye makeup. Because if Gigi Hadid can wear periwinkle blue eyeshadow to the 2021 Met Gala, then why can’t we?

It seems we’re not the only one feeling inspired by Hadid’s Met Gala makeup, either. Halsey just created her own interpretation of the iconic periwinkle colour (almost a year later) using a combination of her About Face Beauty Matte Fluid Eye Paints in purple, blue and white. 

And if you thought that blue eyeshadow lost its cache in 2022, then you can think again. Jodie Turner-Smith just reinvigorated the trend with a very cool hue of multidimensional blue. We don’t know if her eyeshadow is turquoise or cornflower blue, but her lids literally look like a hex code finder tool and we’re obsessed.

Glam gets the blues

There’s something magical about blue-centric glam eye makeup. The colour sings when paired with an angled slick of black eyeliner (like Hadid’s iconic Met Gala moment this year) and Rowan Blanchard’s powder blue ‘60s eye makeup and floating eyeliner will forever live on in our hearts TBH. Not to mention  Jodie Turner Smith’s negative space eyeliner still gives us chills whenever we reminisce on the midnight-hued glam she wore to the LA premiere of Queen & Slim.

Metallic moments

Channel the natural beauty of precious gems sapphire and lapis lazuli with a healthy swathe of metallic eye makeup like these hunnies. Aussie model Duckie Thot dipped into a deep shade of sapphire blue, while TikTokers Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae embraced the trend with shades of cobalt and cerulean blue respectively.

Paloma Elsesser may have spent her weekdays strutting her stuff for the likes of Lanvin and Chloe on the runways of Paris fashion week, but when night fell the model could be seen running through the streets of Paris with her friends, her eyelids emblazoned in a striking (not to mention trendy) shade of metallic blue. Iconic in every sense of the word.

Just wing it

Pair the out-there eye makeup colour with a classic makeup moment like winged eyeliner for an updated take on an old favourite. Keep things close to the lashline with a dash of denim blue like Yara Shahidi, channel your inner Debbie Harry with a punk-inspired wing à la Iris Law or let your liner fly sky high like Halsey’s floating eyeliner in cyan.

Baby blues

Follow the lead of The Powerpuff Girls resident babytalker Bubbles and paint your lids a cartoonish shade of baby blue. Get wild with a bit of shimmer like Dua Lipa’s go-to party look, define your eyes with a pop of colour like Barbie Ferriera or make the unexpected shade your signature style for a season like Dove Cameron.
