Chances are, if you own a multi-colour eyeshadow palette, you’ve attempted a smoky eye. It’s by no means an easy look to master, which is why we’ve pulled together this makeup guide to walk you through exactly how to apply a smoky eye.
The toolkit
When it comes to creating a smoky eye look, you can’t go past a palette that’s equipped with *lots* of shades that you can play with. In this tutorial, we used MAC Art Library: Nude Model (with 12 different neutral shades, you really can’t go wrong), but we also recommend trying Maybelline New York City Mini Eyeshadow Palette in Matte About Town.

Apply a base colour
The difference between wearing one eyeshadow colour on your eyelids and wearing a smoky eye is layering different tones that work well with each other. So, it’s important not to skip this step: First, use a small fluffy brush to pick up a light beige eyeshadow colour, then sweep it across your eyelid. You should stop at just above the top of your eyeball.

Add another shade
Next, work a medium brown shade across your lids, focusing on your outer corners. Don’t forget to blend in circular motions to eliminate harsh lines.

Define your eyes with a dark tone
Using a black or dark brown eyeshadow, apply the colour across your upper lash line, and blend it into your outer corners over the medium brown eyeshadow.

Blend it out
This is a super important step when it comes to successfully pulling off a smoky eye. With a large fluffy brush, blend the colours together in small circular motions to eliminate any harsh lines.
The final look
And there you have it - a dark smoky eye in just four steps!
