The budget-friendly hack responsible for Margot Robbie's bouncy Met Gala blowout
Something strange happened when invitees heard the theme for the 2023 Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”.
Whether it was a conscious consensus or not, celebrities seemed to flock to archive looks from the Chanel runways of the ‘90s. Subsequently, the hair and makeup that eventuated on the evening bore the same aesthetic signifiers of the era: bouncy blowouts, matte makeup and flawless complexions.
BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim made her Met Gala debut in a reinterpretation of a look from the Chanel Fall/Winter 1990 Ready-to-Wear collection.
Meanwhile, Dua Lipa arrived wearing a wedding gown from the Haute Couture Fall/Winter 1992 collection that was famously worn on the runway by Chanel muse Claudia Schiffer.
Margot Robbie also wore a recreation of an archive look – sepcifically, a transparent bustier gown from Chanel’s Spring 1993 Haute Couture collection.
Robbie’s hairstylist Bryce Scarlett wanted to honour the gown’s ‘90s aesthetic in a modern way, he said in a statement released by Dyson.
“We took inspiration for the hair from her stunning 90’s Chanel archival dress that was originally worn by Cindy Crawford in the spring 1993 couture show,” he explained. “I wanted to give a modern take on the 90’s supermodel hair that Cindy had walking down the runway.”
After using a combination of root thickening spray on her roots and volumising mousse on her mid-lengths to ends, Scarlett styled her hair into a side-parted ‘90s blowout using the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler ($949 at Adore Beauty) and a round brush attachment for extra volume.
Scarlett’s genius hack for bouncy curls that hold all night long? Use velcro rollers and roll the hair away from the face to promote lift. After the curls have cooled, remove the rollers and tease the hair for extra body.
We recommend: Mermade Hair Heatless Velcro Roller Kit ($19 at Mermade Hair).
He then finished Robbie’s hair and smoothed flyaways with a few careful strokes of a boar bristle brush, the Dyson Airwrap smoothing attachment, and a spritz or two of a finishing mist.
Margot Robbie’s hair may have caught our eye, but we couldn’t help but notice she wore the same American manicure to the Met that she had at the 2023 Oscars.
