Makeup artist Rae Morris shares her dos and don’ts
The days may be getting lighter but your lip shade should be getting darker. Deep red lips are having a moment and yes, you can wear this tricky trend. Celebrity makeup artist Rae Morris tells us how to make dark red lipstick work for you.
1
Get your base right
We’re not talking about your lips here – getting your skin right is just as important when attempting this look. “Anything dark or deep red can bring out redness and imperfections in your skin, so you must have an even canvas,” says Morris. So what if your skin isn’t perfect? Try using a primer that has a green tint before you put on your foundation. It won’t look green on – it disappears on contact with your skin – and helps to neutralise any redness you have. Try L’Oréal Paris Nude Magique Anti-Redness CC Cream.
2
Don’t layer it on
Just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you need to be heavy-handed with your application. Rather, the opposite is true. “The less you have on your lip, the longer it lasts,” says Morris, who suggests buying the most strongly pigmented lipstick you can find and then using less of it. We love Covergirl Outlast Longwear + Moisture Lipstick in Amazing Auburn.
3
Use a pencil for added depth
“Try using a darker lip pencil underneath, then use a slightly more red lipstick on top,” suggests Rae. You’ll still get that super-dark look, but feathering in your lips with a darker colour pencil isn’t as scary as applying such a statement shade straight from the tube – and you’ll get a nice sense of depth to your lip colour, which is more flattering than one block shade. Try MAC Lip Pencil in Brick.
