The haircuts that are going to be huge in 2017

When it comes to hair, hairstylist Anthony Nader knows what’s up. Not only has the hair guru worked in the industry both in Australia and overseas for more than two decades, but he's also owned and run the wildly successful RAW salon in Sydney for 20 years now. And given that he's styled hair for clients, models and celebrities in-salon and for photoshoots and runway shows, it’s safe to say Nader can spot an upcoming trend a mile away.

So we grilled the hair expert and entrepreneur to find out exactly which cuts are going to be big this year – so if you’re feeling antsy with your current style and need a change, keep reading.

The biggest trend for short hair

If you’re all about a short, sassy boy cut, Nader reassures that this year there’s no need “to feel like you've been ‘shorn’ like a sheep, like all your confidence has been clippered off in a matter of minutes.”

Nader recommends: “Be sure to keep the outline of your hairline not so sharp and harsh, and opt for your strands to have a little length in them, so it creates a softness and also feels more fashion-forward, too.”

And if you’re someone who wants to still experiment with different ways to style your new short ‘do, ask to keep some length at the top, as this will allow you to play around with different hair shapes, allowing you to chop and change between sleek and polished and disheveled texture. Who ever said short hair wasn’t versatile?

The biggest trend for medium hair

The bob and lob aren’t going anywhere, but if you really want to nail the styles this year, Anthony says soft layers are in.

“2017 is the year to move away from that razor sharp, box-like graphic bob and return to the ever-classic soft layering cut throughout the interior of your haircut. It's time to go back to softening this medium length so you can do more with it and by this, I mean creating Hollywood red carpet waves or that cool girl texture that resembles Selena Gomez's new do,” says Nader

A shorter style or medium-length cut with some layers is also great for those with fine hair, as “your strands will appear thicker.”

The biggest trend for long hair

Nader’s best tip for having a long cut in 2017? Not having it too long.

“Now I'm not saying take 10 inches off the length, but by taking the length up a little more, your hair will have more shape and, might I add, volume at the roots, too, which is bonus! Keep your ends clean cut and healthy,” he recommends.

And a word to the wise for those with lighter hair looking to keep it long: “If your hair is highly bleached and you’re wanting to stay with a longer length, just remember that you need to constantly hydrate your strands with moisture so it bounces back into shape rather than a straight fuzz, which happens most of the time if you neglect it.”
