PSA: ‘60s beauty trends are making a MAJOR comeback

This blue pastel '60s makeup look couldn’t be more perfect if it tried. If bold palettes and dramatic eyes aren’t your thing, but you still want to get in on the vintage beauty trend, this is the perfect in-between. Attending the premiere of her latest film Tolkien, our gal Lily rocked a cute ‘60s-inspired mod look that’s subtle enough to wear on the reg. The pop of baby blue colour gives off a fun, playful vibe, while her super-sized lashes bring a modern day take on Twiggy’s famous eye makeup.

If you want to master this vintage makeup look, we think Zoeva Sweet Glamour Eyeshadow Palette in the shade Childhood Adaption or Wish Fulfilment are pretty close matches. All you have to do is apply the hue over your lids using a small brush and build up the colour as you go. Finish with a solid swipe of volumising mascara, like L’Oréal Paris False Lash X-Fiber Mascara, on the top and bottom lashes. Or you can just add a pair of false eyelashes!

Oh, Lucy. When it comes to recreating 1960s makeup looks, the Bohemian Rhapsody star has been one of our biggest sources of inspiration – the girl has been absolutely killing it on the red carpet. And so far, her playful cat eyeliner at this year’s British Academy Television Awards would have to be our favourite retro combo. According to Jo Baker, Lucy Boynton’s makeup artist (seriously, scroll through her Insta - it’s ‘60s-inspired makeup heaven), kitten ears were the inspiration behind the unique eyeliner look.

On her Instagram page, Baker revealed she created the look using CHANEL makeup, writing “Modernise your classic #cateye..make it playful..and show me your Kitten Wings.” Short, sharp, thick and narrow, it’s the perfect melding of an Audrey Hepburn-esque classic with a new kitschy kinda flair. Teamed with oversized Twiggy-inspired lashes (yet again!) and her short hair tucked behind her ears, the look is simple yet totally striking.

Want to copy this new-look winged eyeliner? Try CHANEL Intense Longwear Eyeliner Pen and trace a triangle at the outer corner of your eye. Unlike your usual cat-eye, the bottom line doesn’t have to connect with the lash line – it’s more of a ‘floating’ or negative space wing. To get the triangle right, just think of…well, cat eyes! The trick to getting it bang-on is to make sure the point of the triangle lines up with the outer corner of your brows. Forget all that cut crease business, this is where it's at!

Making her Cannes red carpet debut, Margot Robbie honoured ‘60s film star Sharon Tate by recreating one of her most iconic hairstyles worn to the same event in 1968. The Aussie actress, who plays Sharon Tate in the new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, absolutely oozed ‘60s vibes, wearing her long hair parted down the centre and two loose braids on either side of her naturally textured hair. She looks like she’s walked straight out of Woodstock and we *cannot* get enough of it. 

The best part? It’s super simple to recreate (and even easier for those with straight hair!). Just do two loose half-braids on either side of your part, stopping around the halfway point of each braid and ditching the hair ties for an effortless, natural hair look. This style works best on second or third-day hair because it’ll have a little extra grit. Otherwise, you can use a styling spray with a firm hold (like TRESemmé Salon Finish Extra Hold Hairspray) to keep those braids in place, or some clear hair elastics (Scunci do a pack of 52 for under $5!).  

Big hair is in, people! Elle Fanning revived another of the most iconic 1960s hairstyles at the Chopard Trophée dinner at the Cannes Film Festival. She wore her hair half-up in lightly-tousled, undone waves, teased at the crown for some added volume (it’s almost like a mini bouffant!) with long face-framing layers left loose at the front. The side part made for a strikingly elegant and polished look. Anyone else getting some serious Jean Shrimpton/Brigitte Bardot/Jane Fonda vibes? Teamed with a sharp cat-eye and pale lips, this is one totally wearable combo that’s got us feeling inspired.
