How to get Kacey Musgraves' 'Deeper Well' tour matcha-inspired eye makeup

Kacey Musgraves always looks flawless on and off stage. In fact, we’d argue she’s had some of the best makeup moments in the music industry. 

The country singer has been holding down her reputation on the Deeper Well tour thanks to her makeup artist Moani Lee, who’s been travelling with Musgraves through North America and Europe. 

Lee has clearly been drawing inspiration from country legend Dolly Parton and pop icon Cher for a number of the singer’s on-stage makeup looks. So far we’ve seen Musgraves sport retro-inspired dramatic winged eyeliner in Amsterdam, cerulean blue eyeshadow in Glasgow, an olive green cut crease in Pennsylvania.

But this week, Musgraves landed in San Diego, and Lee drew inspiration from a more modern trend source — the humble matcha latte. 

Yep, that’s right, 2024's beverage of choice has been turned into an eye makeup look. 

Naturally, it looks phenomenal on Musgraves (the girl can really rock any shade of green in our opinion). But if you’re curious if the look might be up your alley too, we've sourced all of the makeup products Lee used, so you can do just that.

The base makeup

To prep Musgraves' skin, Lee moisturised her face with the 111SKIN Repair Day Cream ($346.50 from Cult Beauty), and gently patted the 111SKIN Eye Lift Gel Nac Y2 ($307.53 from Revolve) under the singer’s eyes.

Then she followed up with the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Hydrating Primer ($55 from Sephora) to help keep Musgraves makeup in place under the hot lights of the stage. 

Lee used the cult-favourite Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($115 from Sephora) to create an even-toned, flawless base, and she spot concealed any areas that needed to be covered or brightened with the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Concealer ($75 from Sephora).

Then she lightly dusted the Charlotte Tilbury AIRbrush Flawless Finish Powder ($73 from Charlotte Tilbury) over the areas of Musgraves' makeup that she wanted to mattify.

The cheek makeup

Musgraves is one of the few people we’ve seen pull off a bright cheek and eye look at the same time. We think half of that is down to Lee’s undeniable skill at finding the exactly right shade to match the singer’s natural undertones.

For this look, Lee contoured the periphery of Musgraves' face with the Patrick Ta Crème Contour & Powder Bronzer Duo in 'She's Sculpted' ($72 from Sephora) and the accompanying Patrick Ta Contour Brush ($63 from Sephora). Then she added a flush of sunburnt colour on the high points of Musgraves' cheeks using the Patrick Ta Major Headlines Double-Take Creme & Powder Blush in 'She's Giving' and ‘Just Enough’ ($68 from Sephora).

The brow makeup

Lee kept Musgraves’ brows quite natural to keep the colourful makeup look balanced. Using a light hand, she defined the tails of her arches with the Charlotte Tilbury Brow Cheat Eyebrow Pencil in ‘Medium Brown’ ($48 from Charlotte Tilbury), and then she gently created hair-like strokes at the front of the brow using the same pencil, but in the shade ‘Taupe’.

After she’d finished filling them in, Lee set Musgraves’ eyebrows in place with the Charlotte Tilbury Brow Fix Sculpting Gel ($48 from Charlotte Tilbury).

The eye makeup

Despite the boldness of the eye makeup, Lee actually only used three products to create the look. She started with the Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix Mattes in 'Matcha' ($35.88 from Beauty Bliss) as a base and to create the shape that she wanted on Musgraves’ eyelid. 

Then she dipped into the ColourPop Cosmetics Fade Into Hue Eyeshadow Palette (USD$35 from ColourPop Cosmetics). She used the bright green shade ‘Dyed Up’ in the low outer crease and inner corner of the eye, and the lemon yellow ‘Big Smile’ on the lid. Then she blended the two shades into the high crease of the lid using a soft baby blue shade called ‘Take It Easy’.

To finish the look, Lee picked up an emerald green shade from the palette called ‘Bold Type’ on an angled brush to line the singer’s eyes. Then she applied two to three coats of the Thrive Causemetics® Liquid Lash™ Extensions Mascara (USD$26 from Thrive Causemetics) to Musgraves’ top and bottom lashes. 

As for the false lashes, Lee cut the KISS The New Natural False Eyelashes in 'High Bun' ($12.99 from Amazon) and the KISS Lash Couture Naked Drama Collection False Eyelashes in 'Ruffles' ($27.71 from Amazon Australia) in half and stacked them on top of each other at the end of Musgraves’ lash line to create a lifted, winged lash look under the stage lights. 

But according to Lee, the KISS The New Natural False Eyelashes in 'Nude Blazer' ($11.15 from Amazon) are a great option if you prefer a more natural, soft lash look during the day — just layer a few coats of mascara on the outer corner lashes to imitate that lifted shape.

The lip makeup

Last but not least, Lee used the deep brown Makeup Forever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil in ‘02 Satin Rosewood’ to line Musgraves lips, and then filled in her pout with the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Satin Lipstick in 'Nude Lavalliere' ($70 from Sephora).

Unfortunately, Makeup Forever has discontinued the Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil range, but the Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil in 'Limitless Brown' ($35 from Sephora) provides a similar finish and shade match. Plus, the multipurpose formula can be used on lips, cheeks and eyes too.
