How to achieve a flyaway bun

The messy bun gets given an avant-garde overhaul in five simple steps

Everyone loves a chignon. This new season style is more avant-garde than glamourous. Our tip: keep the texture dry and the bun low. Here’s how to nail this chic hairstyle.

1

Spritz your roots

This style looks better on second-day hair. To give strands extra grip, spritz a dry shampoo or texturising dust to the roots of dry hair, then use a paddle brush to smooth hair away from your face.

2

Pull hair back

Gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure with an elastic.

3

Twist it back

Twist the tail to create a bun and pin it in place. If you have fine hair, backcomb sections of your ponytail to create a voluminous, textured chignon.

4

Aim for imperfection

If your knot is too neat, “pull out a few strands using your fingers,” says Sam Overton, creative director at Unilever Haircare.

Spritz to keep the style in place

Mist a matte finishing spray to secure your style.
