Zoë Kravitz just revealed the story behind Catwoman's nails
If there’s one thing Zoë Kravitz knows, it’s how to create impactful but subtle beauty looks.
The YSL ambassador’s eyeliner tips have helped us achieve the great big doe eyes of our dreams, and her hair is always a source of inspiration for getting experimental.
And apparently, her beauty wisdom comes in handy on-set too.
According to an interview with Buzzfeed, Kravitz was the one who came up with the idea for Catwoman’s extremely long nails: “We shot two months before quarantine and everything shut down, so in that time, I started to grow my nails out because we couldn't get manicures.”
“I had this idea to take it further,” she went on, explaining that she contacted The Batman director Matt Reeves when inspiration struck. “I called Matt and was like, ‘I have this idea; we should do crazy, b*tchy, wonderful, scary nails that look like claws.”
The key to the look was that the nails in question had “no nail polish on them, so they looked more like claws,” Kravitz explained.
However, the creative decision didn’t come without its challenges. According to Kravitz, she had to “be able to shoot the gun accurately, load it, and reshoot it, WITH these crazy-long nails”
“So learning how to shoot a gun without breaking a nail was a new skill I developed,” she joked.
Zoë Kravitz isn’t the only celebrity with a penchant for wild manicures. Here are some of our favourite celebrity nail looks so far this year.

Briar Clark got her start in the media industry in 2017, as an intern for Marie Claire and InStyle. Since then, her keen interest in fashion and beauty has landed her gigs as a Digital Content Producer and Beauty Editor with titles like Girlfriend, Refinery29, BEAUTYcrew and beautyheaven. She loves the way seemingly innocuous topics like skin care and style have the ability to put a smile on people’s faces or make them think about themselves a little differently. A big believer in self love and experimentation, Briar has made a point of becoming the Australian beauty industry’s unofficial guinea pig for unusual treatments and daring hair trends. When she’s not testing out the latest beauty launches, Briar is big on broadening her horizons, mostly in the form of food but she’s also partial to travelling to new destinations both near and far (and of course, allocating an extra bag to bring their best beauty offerings home with her).
