So, there’s a new way to make your eyes appear a whole lot bigger and it’s actually super easy. For an instant brightening boost, the latest makeup trend involves ditching your beloved lower lash eyeliner for a more natural and understated eye makeup look.
We first noticed the trend when we spotted it on Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – all at the 2018 CFDA Awards. Three beauty icons sporting the same savvy trick on the same day? Definitely not a coincidence.
While lining your eyes with inky black eyeliner can make them stand out, it can also make them appear squinty – especially if your eyes are already on the smaller side. Not to mention, your makeup can look heavy and overdone, and in case you missed the memo, natural beauty is in.
That’s why this trend is one to try, immediately. It brings it all back to basics and it’s *so* simple to recreate. The key? Less is more.
Plus, we love that this look works for every eye shape.
Take your cues from these stunning celebrity red carpet looks for bigger, brighter eyes with less product and less effort.
Kendall Jenner
Who needs eyeliner when using an eyeshadow in its place that makes your eye colour pop? Kendall complemented her chocolate brown eyes with a shimmery lilac eyeshadow blended across her lids and under her lower lash line for a much more subtle and delicate take on eyeliner. Then she added a set of mascara-free falsies to add definition to her eyes and voila, her eyes are popping on a whole new level. Note. Taken.
Gigi Hadid
Created by celebrity makeup artist Erin Parsons, Gigi blessed us with the most perfect everyday take on this trend. She went super light on the eye makeup (it almost looks like she was wearing nothing at all), allowing her curled upper lashes to do all the work. In keeping with the new ban on lower lash eyeliner, she went bare below her eyes and wore minimal mascara on her bottom lashes, proving that a whole lot of curl up top can produce a more dramatic eye-opening effect on its own.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
While her smoky eye is in no way understated, Rosie contrasted the straight and slightly lifted smoky wing with beautifully long lashes and a pared-back lower lash line. If you’re opting for a similar smoky-eyed look on your next night out, this is the perfect way to complement dark eyeshadow: it makes your eyes look big, bold and dramatic without that smudgy, slept-in vibe that you can get from drawing eyeliner along your lower lash line. If you’re keen to replicate this makeup look for yourself, celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes shared the how-to and products she used on Rosie’s new website Rose Inc., so, you’re welcome.
