Large pores can become noticeable with age – but there are things you can do to keep skin looking its best. While shrinking them requires a prescription (find out more in our lowdown on pores), you can make them appear smaller with a few simple tricks. Follow these four steps to a flawless, smooth complexion.

1

Keep your complexion clean

Remember, a cleaner pore is a smaller-looking pore, so switching to a chemical exfoliant, such as La Roche-Posay Redermic R, with lipo hydroxy acid, will help prevent a build-up of dirt and oil in the pores. “Be sure to clean your face with lukewarm water only, as hot water can open up pores as well as damage skin long term,” says makeup artist Hayley Dutton.

2

Prevent sun damage

“Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent a breakdown of skin elastin and collagen, which will increase the size of pores,” advises dermatologist Dr Li-Chuen

Wong. Try Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face SPF50+.

3

Mattify the surface

Use a mattifying primer and non-comedogenic products that don’t block pores or lead to more oil production. We love Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pore Minimizer and Mattifier.

"Avoid a dewy base as it will highlight pores."

4

Minimise oil production

Pores look bigger just before your period because there’s a surge in the hormones that increase oil production. So try an oil-absorbing clay mask such as Sukin Super Greens Detoxifying Clay Masque.
