Charlotte Tilbury tells us how it’s done
It’s one thing to muster up the courage to swipe on a bold lipstick shade; it also requires skill to get right (feathered, clown-like lippie is a major dampener on anyone’s confidence). British makeup artist and founder of her own cosmetics line, Charlotte Tilbury shares her expert tips to create the perfect pout.
1
Prep lips
Highlighting your lips as a feature creates maximum impact with minimal effort. If you prefer a matte lipstick, exfoliate lips with a scrub and apply a hydrating balm to ensure a smoother finish. Matte formulas tend to highlight imperfections, so a buffed, hydrated lip is the ideal canvas. Our product picks: Lush Lip Scrub and Lanolips Tinted Balm.
2
Fake flawless
Applying foundation or a concealer on lips prior to any product sets the base for longer-lasting lipstick and stops colour from bleeding onto skin. Always remember to blot lips on a tissue to remove excess product and prevent lipstick from marking your teeth.
3
Follow the lines
Lip liners stop lipstick from bleeding into fine lines as well as create the base for a full, defined pout. “By tracing the natural outline of your lips, you can completely reshape and resize the Cupid’s bow and any asymmetrical differences,” Tilbury says. Try a neutral shade that will mimic and enhance the natural hue of your lips. We like Natio Long Lasting Lip Liner in Lotus.
4
You decide: Matte vs gloss
“A matte colour looks modern and fresh, while a gorgeous glossy finish looks seductive and sexy,” Tilbury says. A cream-based formula or gloss can be more flattering and forgiving, delivering longer hydration. Gloss products are great for mature lips, as light catches on shine, creating the illusion of a full, plump pout. For a matte pop, try the richly pigmented L’Oréal Paris Infallible Lip Paint in King Pink; for a high-shine gloss that packs a punch, we love Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre in Red Vixen.
5
Get it on
Both matte and gloss lipsticks can be applied in the same way. “For a softer, more natural finish, apply the lipstick with your finger and tap onto the lips for a plumped, sumptuous look,” Tilbury advises. If you’re pushed for time, try a tapered lipstick for easy application straight from the bullet anywhere, any time. We like Lancôme Absolu Rouge Matte Lipstick in 379. Gloss lipsticks often come with an in-built brush or wand, perfect for fuss-free applications on the go.
