4 steps to the perfect summer makeup base
A minimalist’s approach to an effortlessly flawless complexion
A minimalist’s approach to an effortlessly flawless complexion
The secret to glowing summer makeup is using less and letting your skin shine through. “Makeup should be done but not overdone,” says NARS Pro Artistry Director Rachel Goodwin. “The key is to make a beauty statement without overpowering the woman.” Keep these tips in mind for an effortless summer makeup base.
1
Nourish the skin underneath
Good skin prep gives a glowing finish and “allows makeup to glide on”, says Casey Gore, makeup artist and founder of The Future Mrs. To boost radiance, add a drop or two of facial oil to your moisturiser, suggests Gore. Try Laura Mercier Infusion De Rose Nourishing Oil.
2
Opt for a matte formula
“Using matte foundation or concealer keeps you from needing to use powder and helps makeup stay on,” advises Goodwin. Try NARS Velvet Matte Foundation Stick.
3
Buff with a bronzer brush
If you want airbrushed-looking skin, buffing on foundation is akin to a retoucher’s wand. “I use a bronzing brush as a foundation brush,” says Gore. “Start at the centre of the face and work your way out.” Try Tom Ford Bronzer Brush.
4
Cover up imperfections with concealer
Don’t be afraid to use your hands to work in concealer. “The warmth of your fingertips is the best blending tool,” says Gore. If you need to cover a blemish, use a concealer that is slightly drier in texture to “block out any redness”. Try Benefit Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer.
For under the eyes, look for a formulation that is light reflective and sheer. “One with an orange base will help cancel out blue,” advises Gore. “Test it on a vein on your arm to see if it blocks it out.” Try Revlon Youth FX Fill + Blur Concealer.
