Never really thought about metals...
This is a really interesting concept. I have never really thought about metal deposits and their effect on hair and hair colouring. But if you think about it, metals are in the water, in the air, everywhere in the environment and the products we use, so it makes sense that they are settling into our hair and having some sort of impact. I received this product as part of a Beauty Crew trial, and coloured as normal, priming with the pre-colour serum first. Easy to use, smells lovely, and everything went the way it usually does. As another review mentions, the question here is a longer-term one: does the serum make a colour stay richer longer, fade slower and turn less brassy? Time will tell, and perhaps some follow-up reviews here would be a good idea. As a home-only-colourer, this is a really affordable addition to the process, so if I have at least one of those results I will likely add it to my home colouring routine. Thanks for the opportunity to test this out!
Pleasantly surprised
I definitely was not expecting to like this product. I thought to myself, why would I need to use a primer to colour my hair? I’ve never had a hairdresser use a primer? I was pleasantly surprised!
This product has a similar feel to hair gel and doesn’t spread over your hair easily, you need to ensure you use a decent amount of product (as instructed). Once it was brushed through though, it made the hair dye glide on so easily!
I’ve always struggled to get hair dye spread evenly onto my hair but I feel like this made it so much easier. Also, the colour has stuck insanely well (perhaps a little too much). I’d definitely recommend this product to someone who wants to make their hair dying experience easier!
Left my hair feeling healthy and smooth
I’ve never even thought to try out a pre colour serum, I thought it was a bit of a gimmick but it actually did leave my hair feeling really nice and a lot healthier looking after colour and toner.
I hate the feeling of wirey dry hair the for shampoo after colouring. This serum must have added a layer of protection because my hair didn’t feel like that this time. It was a lot smoother and styled easier afterwards. It really seems like it prevented my hair from going though new damage this time. I’m really impressed with this product and would definitely buy it again!
PRIMER - YOU HAVE TO TRY IT
I used the Clairol Colour Studio Step 1 Primer Pre-Colour Serum 50ml alongside the Shampoo and Conditioner. I'd never tried a hair colour primer before, tbh I didn't know such a thing existed. Similarly to when I first tried a makeup primer, I was amazed by the results.
I don't know how it does it, but my hair seriously looked better, healthier and more professionally treated than when i typically colour my hair at home. Used in conjunction with the after-care products and the Clairol Colour Studio cream in Caramel Brown, I felt as happy as if I'd just had my hair coloured in a salon.
The 50ml container will last 3 - 4 applications for my short hair (plus potentially a couple of root touch ups as well).
The products, including the primer are lightly scented. I can't place the exact smell, but it's like a diluted salon scent, evoking that professional quality.
For the price (under $10), I cannot see a downside to this primer. Absolutely will be purchasing again!
Hard to tell after just one use.
This product claims to prepare your hair to take up the dye colour and protect it against damage, and I imagine that could only really be proven after a decent trial period, however I did find this very easy to use and it certainly helped the dye glide on to my hair nicely. The product itself is a clear, thin gel like consistency with a light 'shampoo' scent to it. I found it very easy to work through my hair, but as the bottle is so small it really only would last 2 to 3 uses. I like the product, however as you are meant to put it only on the lengths of your hair, avoiding the root area I probably wouldn't purchase this in future just for the fact that when I dye my hair it's the roots that I am generally colouring.
Excellent pre-colour serum!
I home-colour my hair very regularly, but have not used a pre-colour serum like this Clairol Prime Colour Studio Pre-Colour Serum before. This product was very easy to use, and it was also simple to incorporate it into the hair colour routine. The serum was easy to apply, as it was just the right consistency to put through my hair using my hands, without it being too runny or too dry. I have fairly short hair, so I like that this serum can be used over several colourings too. The overall result I received with the Clairol hair colour I used was excellent, so I would recommend this serum to anyone who regularly colours their hair at home and wants to achieve a professional result.
The Serum works so well
Clairol Prime Colour Studio Pre-Colour Serum is very easy and quick to use. The instructions are nice and clear to understand. The Pre-Colour Serum has a pleasant scent. The serum works extremely to help the home DIY hair Dye colour the hair. I have shoulder length, fine and flyaway hair but the colour turned out to be much more vibrant and shiny then it usually is. I had absolutely no issues with the Serum. I loved using the hair Serum. I will be buying and using each time I home dye my hair. I would recommend the Clairol Prime Colour Studio Pre-Colour Serum to others that home dye their hair
Don't need to use alot of product
This is the first time I have ever used this product Clairol prime colour studio pre colour serum or anything like it so I was very interested in giving it a go, my honest thought on it was it was it was an easy first step to use, it spread so easily and used it with the brush and bowl provided, I covered my whole head in it and then continued on with the Clairol colour studio cocoa brown shade, this came in a cute little bottle with ample amounts of product in it, the price point is good and I will probably buy again to use once I've finished that bottle as I think it's a great protector for your hair
Trial Team Revuew
I will start by saying it's a bit difficult to review a product like this on its own, as I received this along with at-home hair colour and the shampoo and conditioner from the range to trial. The Clairol Prime Colour Studio Pre-Colour Serum is a product that is designed to be used immediately before colouring hair, generously applying to the hair - avoiding roots - and then starting your hair dye application straight away. It's a slippery kind of gel texture and easy to apply, with me using half the bottle on my just-past-shoulder-length thick hair. it reminds me of a decalcifying pre-shampoo treatment from a well-known luxury haircare brand, actually. As I've only used the product once and in the course of dying and washing my hair, it is a bit hard to comment on this one as a standalone product, but I definitely think it helped as my hair by the time I'd dyed, washed, and blow dried it was very soft, very shiny, and had a really nice even colour.
Elevate your colour experience!
As a qualified hairdresser and beauty reviewer for ReviewCrew, I recently tried the Clairol Prime Colour Studio Pre-Colour Serum, and it truly stands out for anyone seeking vibrant, long-lasting hair colour.
The serum is incredibly easy to apply. Its smooth texture allows for effortless distribution throughout the hair, ensuring every strand is covered. A little goes a long way, making it both economical and effective. The convenient packaging allows for precise application, minimising mess and maximising efficiency.
One of the standout features of this serum is its lovely scent. Unlike many pre-colour products that can be harsh or chemical-laden, Clairol's serum has a subtle fragrance that makes the entire colouring experience more enjoyable. It’s refreshing to use a product that not only performs well but also smells great.
After using the serum, I noticed an immediate difference in how my hair felt post-colouring. It left my strands feeling nourished and hydrated, counteracting some of the dryness that often accompanies the dyeing process. This is particularly important for those with colour-treated hair, as it helps maintain moisture balance.
The serum excels at providing an even canvas for colour application. It helped the dye penetrate uniformly, resulting in a rich, consistent colour that looked stunning. There were no patchy spots, and the overall finish was beautifully vibrant.
Clairol Prime Colour Studio Pre-Colour Serum is an excellent addition to any hair colouring routine. Its ease of use, delightful scent, nourishing properties, and ability to create an even base make it a must-have for anyone looking to enhance their hair colouring experience. I highly recommend it for both professionals and at-home users alike!
Lovely texture
Thank you to Beauty Crew for allowing me to review this product. I’m glad to see that Clairol has come up with a pre colour serum. I feel that this is an innovative product that is not really featured in the beauty market. I really love the light blue clearly labelled packaging. I like the travel size 50ml product, it is nifty and compact and the product can be used for 2-3 applications. The product has a nice white creamy texture and glides nicely through my hair. It’s good to know I am protecting my hair pre colour. I would recommend this product to others.
Time will tell on this one...
I understand what this product is trying to do and I really like the concept. I found that I didn't love it but didn't dislike it either. I think only having a couple of weeks to trial this makes it hard to tell if this has really made a big difference. I have been colouring my hair at home for years and find that it always leaves my hair feeling so nice, shiny and healthy. I can't say that I noticed a difference but then again haven't used the Clairol colour with then without the pre-colour serum to really tell the difference. As for the product itself, there is no overpowering smell so certainly wasn't polarizing either. I don't know if I would continue to use an extra step if not needed. I think time will tell if the colour holds better and hair looks healthy after a few dyes. To be fair I had had a big chop off my hair in the last couple of months so my hair is on the healthier side of what it has ever been.
Great addition to at home hair colouring
I was a bit hesitant about this new addition to coloring my hair at home, but I’m so glad I tried it as apart of the Beauty Crew team. I have coloured my hair many times at home before and have never had great success. I used the Clairol prime Colour Studio pre-colour serum, and the results were great. The instructions were easy to follow, and the application was much simpler than I imagined.
It left my hair feeling soft and nourished, not dry or damaged at all. The coverage was perfect, even over my grays, and the shade looks so natural! I think the colour "Cool Chai" actually suits me better than my blonde colour from the hair dresser, that costs over $300!
I loved how affordable and convenient the whole process was, especially compared to salon visits. I will definitely be using this product again, i think it really makes a difference to at-home colouring.
Pre-colour serum
Thankyou Clairol and BeautyCrew for sending me the Clairol Colour Studio Prime Pre-Colour Serum. This is a cute duck egg blue, little 50ml size plastic bottle. For some reason I was sent two. Its a clear thick serum type fluid and smells like a hairdressing salon. It absorbs quickly when smoothed into the back of my hand. Its meant to help protect hair and maximise colour uptake and is applied to dry hair (avoiding roots), and combed through immediately before applying hair colour without rinsing out. One bottle is supposed to last for up to two to three applications.
I'm in two minds about this product. On the one hand, I achieved brilliant results on the other, how necessary is it? If I had been able to apply the hair colour without this serum, then several months later try it with, then I'd have an idea as to how effective it was. The hair colour result was perfect, full coverage of greys, but is that due to the serum or would I have achieved that result anyway? The condition of my hair post hair colour is fantastic but once again, is that due to the hair colour or the pre-treatment serum? I can only judge on what I've done and the results I have, which I am very happy with. Its not an expensive product so I'd probably err on the side of caution and always apply in conjunction with the colour as recommended on the box of colour which states "Apply after pre-colour serum".
New and innovative
What a fantastic new colour system! As a hairdresser of over 25 years it’s refreshing to see a new drug store colouring system that is new and innovative! The new formula in this colour system accommodates a range of hair types and caters for a sensitive scalp aswell, which is a game changer.
The system is simple and easy to use and the hair feels incredible after!! The scent is not near as strong as others on the market and the experience is quite comfortable!
This system covers grey and I have had no fading issues at all! I recommend trying this new system out if you are a user of home colour!
Total Package in a Box
Such a great invention. This has prepped my hair before colouring. The refreshing smell just gives the senses some boost of sensation, having that “me time” feel. It’s like my make up primer. It is a great colour protectant before facing some harsh ingredients from the hair colour itself. Although using the Hair Colour from step 2
Clairol itself is amazing in terms of coverage , texture and smell. To be combined with the last step for hair colour care protect conditioner just gives it a total package combo in a Boxed Hair colour Technology. Thank You for this brilliant game changer
