5 tricks to nail the modern-day sexy hair look

Because tousled waves aren’t the be-all and end-all

When most of us think of ‘sexy hair’ we tend to think of dishevelled loose waves or ultra glamorous vintage curls. And whilst those looks are great hairstyles, they’re also a tad over-done. Thankfully, Jennifer Yepez, celebrity hairstylist for the likes of Gigi Hadid, Chanel Iman and Alessandra Ambrosio shared with Refinery29 her tricks for nailing the modern-day version of sexy hair. You’re going to want to try these clever tricks, stat. And buy a volumising spray pronto!

Sleep in a topknot

For flowing waves that are a cinch to recreate, Yepez suggests blow-drying your hair straight and tying it into a topknot before you go to bed. In the morning, simply spray with a little dry shampoo to lift hair at the roots, brush through and you’re good to go.

Create volume with heat

If you’re looking to add some serious volume to your hair, Yepez says applying heat is key. “Spray a volumising spray from root to end, get a good medium-sized brush, and always lift from the roots when blow-drying."

Brush out your curls

For a soft and romantic curly look, Yepez suggests prepping hair with volumising sprays before wrapping sections of hair around a curling wand to create soft waves. The key is to not use the clamp on your curling iron so the curl remains loose, and to run a brush gently through your tresses for a more natural looking finish.

Add definition with a dry conditioner

Although Yepez prefers applying volume and salt sprays to wet hair, serious definition can be added on day two. Her favourite go-to product to boost second-day locks is a dry conditioner, as it “gives great texture and waves” while also delivering a smooth, shiny finish similar to just-washed hair.

Give hairspray a miss

To perfect glamorous sweeping waves Yepez says, “the most important thing is to prep your hair with enough volumising spray.” Once you’ve created good hold by layering products into wet hair, you won’t have a need for hairspray, which can leave hair looking crunchy and stiff.
