I absolutely can’t live without false lashes, and they’re a must-do in my makeup routine because they instantly make my eyes look bigger and more awake. To be honest, it’s a tricky thing to master - it took me weeks to get it right - but the results are worth it when they’re applied properly.
Before you begin, here are three of my top tips to ensure the best result every time:
- It’s important to consider what lash style you’re going to use. I like a wispy style - where the hairs are a mix of long and short - because they add lots of volume and length. For a natural result, also look for a set where hairs cross over at the roots, as they will blend in nicely with your natural lashes.
- Falsies made with natural hair will give a more realistic result. Plastic lashes will have a super-shiny finish, making them look a little too fake.
- Apply your falsies at the end of your makeup routine, after eyeshadow, eyeliner or anything else. You’ll get a much more seamless look that way.
1
Take it out
Take one lash out of its packaging, and measure it against you eye. Something like ModelRock Lashes in Candid Candice will give your eyes some definition.
2
Cut to size
With some scissors, cut the lash shorter, about two millimetres shorter than the length of your eye. Any longer than this and it could get in the way of blinking. If you’ve got a flared false lash style (where the hairs go from short to long), then cut from the long side - this will give you a much more natural-looking effect.
3
Add some glue
Squeeze out some lash glue onto the end of your eyeshadow brush (such as Ardell Lashgrip Eyelash Clear Adhesive), and apply a light layer onto the band of your lashes. Cotton tips are great for this, but you could also use the end of a makeup brush, but only if your glue is made from latex, which will peel off when it dries.
4
Bend the band
Let the glue dry a little, and fan it with your hands to speed up the process. As it dries, bend the lash back and forth - the curved shape will apply better to your eyelid.
5
Stick them on
Using your index finger and thumb on one hand, place the lash at the outer corner of your eye, with your head tilted back. Keep your eyes on the mirror, and wait about 10-20 seconds, as the glue dries on one side.
6
Push it down
Carefully push the lash down, little by little, towards the inside corner of your eye.
7
Add some mascara
Take a look in the mirror, and see if you’ve applied the lash evenly, and as close to the lashline as possible. If you didn’t get it right, just peel the lash off carefully (go from one side to the other) and start again. Look at your lashes side on as well. If there are any of your lashes sticking down or out of place, use a black mascara to blend them in with your falsies.
