Winter trend to try: Berry lips

While we were frolicking on beaches and enjoying the summer sunshine earlier in the year, winter beauty trends were starting to take shape in the northern hemisphere, and there was no makeup trend bigger than the vampy berry lip.

Seen in different tones in varying degrees of coverage, we saw that the trend was versatile enough to be embraced by everyone – no matter skin tone or age. 

And now that we are well and truly immersed in the colder months, it’s time to take advantage of the rich hue. Here’s how to find the right one for you, plus the perfect makeup to complement the bold colour. 

How to pick your shade

The term ‘berry’ actually covers a variety of shades, including those that are a bit more purple-based, as well as those that show hints of brown, and even dark reds. 

As a general rule of thumb, if you have cooler undertones in your skin and are fair, opt for a berry that has cool tones – like the purple-based plum shades – and if your skin is warmer, and a bit darker, you can experiment with brown-based burgundies. Deep red shades that look like your favourite glass of wine can suit all skin tones. But that being said, while these shades will complement your skin best, it’s always a good idea to choose the undertone and shade that you prefer.

How to apply the colour

For the richest finish, apply the colour straight from the bullet and layer if needed. Then, when you’re done, put your finger in your mouth and close your lips around your finger. With lips still closed, pull your finger out to avoid getting any lipstick on your teeth. For maximum colour effect, try a matte- or satin-finish lipstick. 

If you’re new to bold colour, you can dip your toes into the berry trend by dabbing the colour onto your lips with you finger for a stained finish. You can also try a sheer lipstick or lipgloss for a subtle effect. 

How to do the rest of your makeup

Whether worn sheer or opaque, a berry lip is a powerful statement, so keep your base flawless, skin slightly contoured, brows defined, and your eye makeup neutral. 

You can simply line your eyes with black liner and finish with lashings of mascara, but if you prefer to incorporate some eyeshadow into your look, stick to golds, champagnes, bronzes, and nudes. Smoky eyes are definitely not off bounds for night, but try keep it natural tones that aren’t too heavy.
