How to pull off auburn eyeshadow

If you’re looking for a way to indulge in chocolate this Easter sans the sugar intake, then we suggest adding a cocoa-toned eyeshadow palette to your collection of beauty products. And no, we’re not talking about a regular eyeshadow palette that only carries shades of beige and soft browns. Instead, we’re obsessing over the latest launches that feature the addition of auburn - you know, that delectable medium brown shade that’s a little warmer than cinnamon, lighter than chestnut, and doesn’t have the metallic finish of rose gold. We sought the advice of Sally Axford, MECCA’s Senior Artist, to get the lowdown on wearing auburn eyeshadow.

1 / Anyone can wear auburn eyeshadow

We’re stoked to learn that people of all skin tones can pull off this eyeshadow colour. Axford just notes the following: “the one rule is to make sure skin is evened-out, or concealed (if there are blemishes), as any redness in the face is amplified with [this shade]”. As for eye colour, Axford says it is “ incredible on green, hazel and blue eyes, and [ can] brighten brown eyes. It’s very versatile as warm tones are generally found in the body naturally.”

2 / You can wear auburn eyeshadow on its own

The best thing about auburn eyeshadow is that it wears beautifully by itself - no complementary colours needed, such as in a smoky eye. “The terracotta shade can be worn solo if you blend it out with a tinted face powder,” says Axford. This can soften the edges for a seamless look. “However, some makeup novices may find that blending the socket with a transition colour – a beige, light brown or even pale peach – will help ensure an even blend.”

3 / Try the eyeshadow colour as a liner

We love auburn eyeshadow’s versatility; you can use it on different areas of your eyes to create various makeup looks. For example, if you’re not ready to try this eyeshadow colour all over your eyelid, Axford suggests trying it as a liner along your upper or lower lash line. “Just make sure it’s thick enough that it looks purposeful! Wet a liner brush with water or a setting spray to create your own liner.”

4 / Go all out with the application

Intensity is key due to the bold character of auburn eyeshadow. “With this shade, and any other in this family, such as pinks and reds, it’s important to go strong with the application, as a washed out version of any of these colours can just make the eye area look red and angry,” says Axford. The trick to improving intensity comes down to the makeup brushes you use. “Apply the main colour with a flat eyeshadow brush (instead of a domed version), as this will ensure intensity rather than a wash of colour. Go forth with confidence, a good concealer, and some strong mascara skills, and you’ll be fine!”

5 / Finish your eye look with black

If you want your auburn eyeshadow look to appear complete, Axford has the following rule: “To ensure you avoid your eyes looking red or washed out, make sure you anchor the look with black – liner and lots of mascara will help with this!”

6 / Experiment with different textures

Can't decide whether you should go for a glitter or matte finish with the auburn eyeshadow trend? "The finish of matte or shimmer can create very different moods with this tone," explains Axford. "Shimmer will give more of a glam look whereas matte will be more soft and wearable."
