In an ideal world, our curls would naturally dry into perfectly undone spirals, sans frizz. We’d also have three-day weekends and never need to maintain our eyebrows; but alas, life isn’t fair. However, managing curly hair doesn’t need to be as hard as it seems. With just a few simple hair tips and tricks from Goldwell Master & Professional Trainer and KMS Ambassador, Neil Barton, and a touch of patience, you’ll soon be creating curls worthy of bombshell status on a daily basis.
1
Style hair when it's wet
According to Barton, the secret to creating flawless curls (and minimising frizz) is to make sure you style your hair when it’s wet. “When you get out of the shower, and when your hair’s still wet, spray your styling products throughout your hair and scrunch your ends to squeeze the curl back into shape. It’s important not to run your fingers through your hair, as doing so will ruin the shape of your curl,” explains Barton.
2
The more product the better
When curly hair is concerned, the old adage of ‘less is more’ doesn’t apply. In fact, “with curly hair, more product is actually better,” says Barton. “When you wear your hair straight, you avoid loading it up with products as it can leave hair looking dull. Curly hair however, reflects less light, which means you can apply more products to control any potential frizz.”
3
Don't be afraid to multi-style
The concept of not applying conditioner to the roots of your hair isn’t a new one. However, the concept of only applying certain products to certain areas of your hair – known as multi-styling – is becoming an increasingly popular approach for achieving all your hair goals at once. According to Barton, multi-styling is essential to ensure your curly hair looks its best. “I like to apply a volumising mousse on the roots, a frizz tamer on the ends and finish the cocktail with a little bit of serum throughout the mid-lengths.”
4
Spritz second-day hair to reactivate the curl
There’s nothing more frustrating than having perfect, bouncy curls one day, only to wake up the next with a mane that rivals Hagrid’s in Harry Potter. In order to beat that second-day frizz, Barton recommends reverting back to step one and spraying your hair with water before scrunching your curls again. The best thing about this method is that you shouldn’t need to apply any additional product, because “as soon as you wet your hair, the products you’ve already applied should reactivate and get to work again,” explains Barton.
If your sea salt spray is gathering dust in your bathroom cupboard, you’re going to want to bust it out because this humble product can transform curly hair in more ways than one.
