The 2 products J.Lo's hair stylist uses to enhance her natural curls

Definition for the win

For us, picking a favourite J.Lo hairstyle is like picking a favourite child as a parent – pretty much impossible. Short, long, sleek, wavy, up, down, we love ‘em all. It's certainly no secret that Ms. Lopez has one of the most versatile and enviable heads of hair in the biz.

But if we’re being really, really honest, it’s her natural curls that leave us breathless every single time… Just don’t tell her bouncy blow-dry, okay?!

And true to form, every time she blesses our feeds with a snap of herself embracing her curly texture, we spend a suspicious amount of time inspecting said pic in the hopes of figuring out how the hell we can copy her look ourselves.

Her hair stylist Chris Appleton just did us all a massive solid, though, taking to his YouTube channel to break down exactly how he finesses J.Lo’s natural curls to absolute perfection, using just two products…

So if you, like Lopez, were one of the lucky ones gifted with curly hair, your tresses are in for a real treat…

Appleton’s approach is all about three things: defining the curl and adding volume without weighing the hair down. “It’s a really nice combination,” he explained. “It’s a really nice defined curl, [but it’s] not stiff or sticky, [so] you can move the hair around and play with it.”

Starting with dry strands isn’t ideal, though – ‘fresh from the shower’ hair is best. “With curly hair, when styling it, I always like to start with the hair wet, [so that we can see] the curl pattern, and then create a little more control,” he instructed.

Time for the first product: “I like to use this Color Wow Dream Coat Curly for curly hair – it’s the only product I’ve found that doesn't make the hair crispy, but also gives great control so it [offers] a combination of hold, softness and definition.”

It’s not a traditional spritz-and-scrunch or spritz-and-smooth style application in this case, though. “I take sections of hair and twist them around my fingers as I go along. What that effectively is doing is just giving us a little bit of control on the ways the curls are going to dry,” he shared.

“[In terms of which] direction you twist the curls, it’s just really about following your curl pattern; looking at the curl and seeing which direction it’s going and then following that through,” he explained, continuing the twisting technique through the whole head of hair.

Next, you want to use a blow-dryer to apply a bit of heat. “When you’re doing curly hair, always make sure you use a diffuser. It gives you much more control,” Appleton warned. “I’m just lifting the roots up off the scalp a little bit as I’m drying, creating a little bit of volume so we can start to see the curl form.”

Once hair’s about “98 per cent dry” (we enjoy that specificity), Appleton suggests sealing your style with a hydrating cream. “I’m going to add a little bit of [Color Wow] Pop & Lock Shellac, it’s just a really nice moisturising shellac,” he explained.

“[I apply a] couple of pumps just to run through and break the curls up a little bit. This is just going to give it a nice shine – it’s nourishing but it doesn't weigh the hair down."

And there you have it, covetable curls that J.Lo herself would even envy.
