Amidst all the palm painting and platinum blonde, you may have noticed a very different kind of hair trend creeping into your Instagram feed towards the end of 2017. The kinds of women with one million plus followers – think Victoria’s Secret models and red carpet regulars – are steadily swapping their soft waves and sleek, straight strands for – gasp! – masses of curls.
That’s right: curls - and even curly fringes - are making a comeback. Blame it on our inner lazy girl, but embracing your hair’s natural texture has never been hotter. Even perms are back in fashion for those whose hair tends naturally towards the straighter side – provided you and your hairdresser proceed with caution.
“‘We can now create softer, more natural-waved hand curls with a ‘natural perm’,” says Toni & Guy senior technician Dana Monkman. “The products are gentler so we don’t have the over-processed ‘poodle’ result we saw so commonly in the 80s.” Thank goodness for that.
Unlike perms of old, the new ‘natural perm’ takes two to three hours in the hairdresser’s chair, and you can expect to keep your loose waves for three to six months.
“My favourite shape at the moment is a ‘70s-inspired shag with soft, sculpted curls,” says Monkman. “This shape is great as it is versatile in length and can be worn with or without a fringe.”
Zoe Foster Blake is the latest famous face to try the trend, posting the below selfie with her “natural, air-dried curls, zero styling, the fringe I’ve wanted since 2015.” Hers is the work of Melbourne-based hairstylist Lauren Mackellar.
She joins a throng of stars rocking mops of curls, from Victoria’s Secret’s Georgia Fowler to Montana Cox and Zendaya.
The only question is: who will be next?
