Lucy Hale’s clever braid for short hair
A big shout out to Lucy Hale for reminding us just how versatile short hair really is. Just because a shorter cut lacks length, it definitely does not mean your library of styles is limited. Not one little bit.
The Pretty Little Liars star initially tricked us all into thinking she styled her short locks into a simple sleek, centre-parted low ponytail at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, but we were wrong. Incredibly wrong.
Upon turning around, Lucy revealed a mohawk-like braid down the centre of the back of her head, which eventually formed into a low, sharp ponytail.
Innovative, isn’t it?
If you want to recreate this clever style on your own lob or bob, start by applying a smoothing serum like Nak Aromas Smooth Straightening Crème to damp hair, before blow-drying straight. Then, part your hair down the centre, before sectioning off a 3cm-wide area of hair in the middle of your head from your crown down to your hair line. Smooth and tightly secure the hair either side of this section with a hair tie at the nape of the neck. Then, braid the middle section of hair, and secure just above the first hair tie. This type of braid isn't too dissimilar to the one seen at MBFWA, so you can click here to learn about the technique.
Finish by smoothing any fly-ways and frizz with a long-lasting hair spray like Garnier Fructis Style Mega Strong Hairspray.

Cherie is somewhat of a digital dinosaur, having kick-started her beauty writing career back in 2009 at PRIMPED alongside industry expert Zoë Foster Blake. Since then, her words have appeared online and on paper for BEAUTYcrew, POPSUGAR, beautyheaven, New Idea, and Fitness First, while her marketing know-how has helped brands such as L'Oréal Paris, The Body Shop, A’kin, and Dr. LeWinn’s add a journalistic flair to their digital content. She is a vocal advocate for (physical) sunscreen, is rather fond of a bold lip, and is utterly terrible at styling hair.
