The chrome nail trend is everywhere
You know a nail trend has gained serious traction when a red carpet’s worth of celebrities are sporting the same style of manicure a mere few feet from each other.
Chrome nails have slowly but surely been permeating our feeds and consciousness, so it was just a matter of time before Hollywood’s A-list got their hands on it.
Not to be confused with the shimmering ‘glazed donut’ chrome-finish we’ve seen Hailey Bieber’s nails touting or Dua Lipa’s metallic manicure, chrome nails are characterised by tips that look like they were dipped in liquid chromium.
Futuristic, reflective, molten and (most importantly) cool, this manicure trend has been spotted on Instagram, TikTok and even the red carpet…
The chrome nail trend at the 2022 MTV VMAs
Chrome nails were the manicure of choice for everyone on the MTV VMA’s 2022 red carpet. Lizzo, Dove Cameron, and rapper Big Latto had digits decorated with the metal-inspired mani especially for the occasion.
Celebrity nail artist Eri Ishizu was responsible for painting Lizzo and Latto’s nails and (thankfully) she shared her technique for achieving the look with OPI Gel Colour and Nail Polish, so you can have A-list digits too.
STEP 1: “Start by applying one coat of OPI GelColor Stay Classic Base Coat. For the nail lacquer version, swap out with OPI Natural Nail Base Coat.”
STEP 2: “Apply one coat of OPI GelColor in ‘Clean Slate’ (from OPI’s new Fall Wonders Collection). For the nail lacquer version, swap out with OPI Nail Lacquer in ‘Clean Slate.’”
STEP 3: “Next use OPI Chrome Effects in ‘Mixed Metals.’ For the nail lacquer version, opt for one coat of OPI Infinite Shine in ‘Silver on Ice.’”
STEP 4: “Finish by applying OPI GelColor Stay Shiny Top Coat. For the nail lacquer vision, use OPI Top Coat.”

How to wear the chrome nail trend
The great thing about chrome nails is that they can be achieved with a simple gel or traditional nail polish. This means you can paint your entire nail with the stuff, try a chrome French manicure, or even layer it over gel paste to create 3D nail art.
This metal-finish manicure is about getting creative and stepping out of your comfort zone. If you’re a die hard nude nails fan, we’d suggest trying an ombre manicure using a combination of chrome colour and your favourite neutral nail colour.
