Everything you'll need to nail your Chappell Roan Halloween look

A crash course in midwestern princess makeup

Beauty Crew Beauty Editor / October 29 2024

If there's one thing we know about Chappell Roan, it's that she's not afraid to take risks with makeup.

It's for this very reason (and the fact that she's one of the most popular artists of the year) that we're looking to the 'Hot To Go' singer for Halloween makeup inspiration.

The beauty of her makeup lies in the fact that there is no singular defining Chappell Roan look — it's a mish mash of queer culture references, glitter, and a bold use of colour.

With an undeniable new romantic quality, and clear references to Club Kids and drag icons like Divine, the midwestern princess aesthetic Roan has coined feels like a contemporary celebration of the roots of queer culture bursting forth from the mundane sprawl of suburbia.

From the myriad rainbow and glitter looks makeup artist, Ali Scharf, has created on 'The Midwest Princess Tour', to the renaissance-inspired moments we saw at the VMAs (courtesy of makeup artist Andrew Dahling), Roan provides her fans with a kaleidoscope of beauty fodder every time she steps on stage.

Want to know what's in the makeup kit of a midwestern princess? Keep scrolling to peep some of the makeup products she's been wearing lately, so that you can nail that Chappell Roan vibe this Halloween.

What makeup products does Chappell Roan use?

1/ The eye makeup

One could argue that you can't successfully pull off a Chappell Roan-inspired makeup look without a hoard of eye makeup products. At the very least you'll need to perfect your lash and liner application skills to nail the aesthetic. Roan's makeup artist, Ali Scharf, only ever uses Lilly Lashes ($40.60 from Beauty Bay) and One Size Point Made Liquid Eyeliner Pen ($35 from Sephora) on the singer.

But she also reaches for the Trixie Cosmetics Play Pigment in 'Game Over' ($24 from Beauty Bay) and Pac Ma'am ($24 from Beauty Bay) as a base for for bolder eye makeup too.

In fact, Scharf is a big fan of laying down pigment products before she applies eyeshadows. She's used the Haus Labs Hy-Power Pigment Paint in 'Mint' ($43 from Haus Labs) to create several high impact eye looks for Roan while on tour.

And much like Kacey Musgraves makeup artist, Moani Lee, she's a big fan of Danessa Myricks pigments — she's used the Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix Pastels in 'Bunny' ($39.40 from Beauty Bay) on Roan's eyes and lips.

While most people might just use one or two eyeshadows to create an eye makeup look, Scharf invests in large, quality artistry palettes that offer a lot of shade options. For the bright eyeshadows and neon blush colours synonymous with Roan's aesthetic she uses the Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Pro Palette Vol. 6 ($113 from Anastasia Beverly Hills).

To create depth and shadow, Scharf contours with cool-toned neutrals and moody greys from the Natasha Denona Xenon Eyeshadow Palette ($125 from Sephora) and the Makeup By Mario Master Mattes® Neutral Eyeshadow Palette ($94 from Sephora).

2/ The brows

Considering that Chappell Roan is so heavily influenced by drag culture, it should come as no surprise that she's not afraid to block out her brows for a makeup look. If you know your way around a glue stick and have the steady hand necessary to draw on a pencil thin brow, then we suggest you go for it.

But if you don't want to find bits of pritt stick in your arches for days to come we suggest sticking to her natural brow look instead. All you'll need is fine-tipped brow pencil like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ($45 from Sephora) and a brow pen in a slightly darker shade. Scharf uses the Glossier Brow Flick ($33 from Glossier) to create a tapered tail when she's doing Roan's makeup on tour.

3/ The cheeks

Scharf isn't a loyalist when it comes to blush, although we have noticed she has been favouring the Haus Labs Color Fuse Blush in 'French Rosette' ($58 from Haus Labs) as of late. We've also spotted her using the pink, coral and purple shades from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Pro Palette Vol. 6 ($113 from Anastasia Beverly Hills) to create custom blush shades for Roan on tour.

4/ The lips

Chappell Roan isn't afraid to mix up her lip colour, but there is one product her makeup artist, Ali Scharf, uses religiously. The Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil ($35 from Sephora) is a mainstay in the artist's kit. She usually relies on the shades 'Limitless Brown' and 'Endless Cacao' to line Roan's lips, but she also dips into darker hues and reds when the occasion calls for it.

The thing we love most about Chappell Roan's lip wardrobe is that it's full of bargain buys — the singer almost exclusively uses drugstore lipsticks that boast longwearing formulas and saturated hues.

So far, while on tour, Scharf has used Revlon's Colorstay Limitless Matte Lipstick in 'Icon Era' ($10 from Priceline), Maybelline's Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in 'Voyager' ($11.99 from Chemist Warehouse), and NYX's Lip Lingerie XXL in 'Xxpose Me' ($10.99 from Chemist Warehouse) on Roan.
