Billie Eilish is bringing back the butterfly clips of the '00s

If you thought you said farewell to the butterfly clips of the ‘90s and ‘00s, you better think again.
The nostalgic hair accessory has been resurrected by none other than Gen Z’s coolest cool girl – Billie Eilish.
Eilish shared her Y2K-inspired hair via Instagram and subsequently gave us flashbacks to our youth. Hands up who had full-blown temper tantrums before school while your mum struggled to get your butterfly clips and zig zag part perfect?
If you’re over having full blown ragers when you get your hair done, and are game for revisiting butterfly clips in adulthood, you’re in luck. Thanks to the resurgent popularity of Y2K styles, there’s a host of options to try.
Keep things classic and style your strands with a set of tortoiseshell, iridescent or glitter butterflies, or dip your toe into more modern interpretations — it’s entirely up to you! Stick to a single clip like Eilish, cluster them on one side of your hair, or sparsely spot them along your scalp if you’re rocking a half-up half-down hairstyle.
Where to buy butterfly clips:
Lovisa Acrylic Mixed Butterfly Mini Claw Pack ($16.99 at Lovisa); Lovisa Tortoiseshell Butterfly Mini Clip Pack ($16.99 at Lovisa); and Lovisa Kids Iridescent Butterfly Claw Pouch ($15.99 at Lovisa).
Rubi 6Pk Mini Butterfly Claws ($12.99 at Cotton On); Token Small Butterfly Hair Clip Pack ($15 at The Universal Store); and Princess Polly Izzy Butterfly Hair Clip Multi Pack ($12 at Princess Polly).
Billie Eilish isn’t the only Gen Z celeb reminding us of the beauty trends of the past. Spiky '90s updos are trending again thanks to Olivia Rodrigo.

A big believer in self love and experimentation, Briar has made a point of becoming the Australian beauty industry’s unofficial guinea pig for unusual treatments and daring hair trends.
