The looks worth copying and how to make them work for you
From artful liner to jewelled headbands, these are the season’s top beauty trends – and our expert tips for taking them from runway to real life.
#1 / Crimson pouts
Seen at: Giambattista Valli, La Perla, Anna Sui
The look: Ditch the lip liner. Makeup artists opted for lived-in lips that were blurred, faded and smeared to showcase burgundy – the season’s hottest lip shade.
Make it work for you: “Burgundy is [both] cool and warm, making it the colour of choice if you don’t know what shade to wear,” says Rae Morris, Priceline Pharmacy Makeup Director.
Products to try: CHANEL Rouge Allure Ink in Expérimenté; MAC Matte Lipstick in Diva; Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Lip Pencil in Blackmail
#2 / Rapunzel braids
Seen at: Balmain, Alberta Ferretti, Jill Stuart
The look: From delicate face-framing micro braids to cascading crimps, the simple plait remained a runway go-to. Damien Rinaldo, L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador at Adelaide’s Boris The Cuttery, suggests experimenting with “styling dust for a bohemian look, or serum for a sleek style”.
Make it work for you: For fine hair, Priceline Pharmacy Hair Director Kenneth Stoddart likes to apply a volumising mousse to damp strands. “Once dry, braid the hair and then pull at the sections to open up and fatten the braid,” he says.
Products to try: Pantene Pro-V Volume Booster Dry Shampoo; L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Super Dust; Make Smooth Serum
#3 / Cool crops
Seen at: Alexander Wang, Chloé, Prada, Elie Saab
The look: Blunt lobs, edgy cuts and pixie short hair were the crop du jour on the international runway circuit. “Blunt cuts are back; but leaving the texture of the hair more relaxed gives the style a more feminine look,” says Rinaldo.
Make it work for you: Adapt the hottest cut of the season by choosing the right length and layers. “But be careful with fringes, as they can make or break you,” Stoddart warns.
Products to try: Moroccanoil Texture Clay; John Frieda Luxurious Volume Perfectly Full Mousse; Evo Shebang-a-bang Dry Spray Wax
#4 / Ever so smoky eyes
Seen at: Chloé, Elie Saab
The look: Gothic smears, broken strokes and smoky finishes were used to reinvent this eye makeup essential. “Perfection is a dirty word with this type of makeup, and using your fingers to apply and blend is the top tip,” says MAC Senior Makeup Artist Nicole Thompson.
Make it work for you: “If you have heavy eyes, start the eyeliner underneath the eye and wing it out to extend the shape,” Morris explains. Small eyes? Don’t line the entire eye – start a third of the way across.
Products to try: Clarins Instant Liner in Black; Smashbox Always On Gel Liner Eyeliner in Fishnet; Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in Black
#5 / Crown jewels
Seen at: CHANEL, Dolce & Gabbana, Marchesa, Altuzarra, Temperley London, Elie Saab
The look: Luxe hair accessories came in every imaginable form – simple velvet bows, pearl-spotted Alice bands and ornate jewelled barrettes. “Velvet accessories look beautifully tactile and are a great way to pretty up your look,” Rinaldo says.
Make it work for you: “A good hair accessory is like choosing a pair of shoes – your whole outfit needs to be considered,” Stoddart stresses. Simple is often best!
Products to try: Mimco A New Leaf Crown Headband; Miss Shop Rosette Headband; Hepburn & Co Leopard Acrylic Bow Clip
#6 / Arty eyes
Seen at: Prabal Gurung, Oscar de la Renta, Maison Margiela
The look: When it came to colour on the catwalk, the eyes had it all. Makeup artists combined bold, bright hues on and around the eyelids with creative flair.
Make it work for you: If you have hooded lids, Morris suggests concentrating colour to your lash line or inner corners. Those with almond-shaped eyes can get adventurous with vibrant shades.
Products to try: Kat Von D Pastel Goth Eyeshadow Palette; Nars Matte Eyeshadow in Outremer; Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon in Mist Me
#7 / Supernatural skin
Seen at: Fendi (see main image), Calvin Klein
The look: A minimal makeup mood ruled these runways, with an emphasis on clear complexions created using illuminating formulas for a lit-from-within glow. Thompson explains the key to mastering this is “prepping the skin with conditioning, hydrating and highlighting products”, so you won’t have to use as many products over the top.
Make it work for you: If you’re concerned about crossing over from glowing to greasy, Morris suggests using a mattifying primer – especially down the T-zone – and to keep blotting papers on stand-by.
Products to try: Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder in Brilliant Strobe Light; Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup; L’Oréal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer
#8 / Tall (pony)tails
Seen at: Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen
The look: The smallest modifications reinvented the everyday ponytail this season. Make it sleek by slicking it over to one side, or ethereal when amped up with texture and gathered back loosely. After the perfect pony position? “The base of the pony needs to sit high to create a beautiful side profile,” says Rinaldo.
Make it work for you: If you find your mane unmanageable, Stoddart has two suggestions: “Either show off the unruly hair texture and wear it in an ’80s-esque, high-on-the-crown ponytail, or go with a low, loose pony – perhaps with a ribbon tied around the base for a touch of chic.”
Products to try: Lady Jayne Elastics; Mason Pearson Handy Bristle Hairbrush; Toni & Guy Casual Sea Salt Texturising Spray
