As far as high-profile bloggers go, Aimee Song (familiar to some as Song of Style) is one of the original and best.
A quick look at her 5 million follower-strong feed, however, and you’d never guess the radiant, glowing complexion frequently featured is, as Song describes, “dry, sensitive [and] with eczema.”
It’s for this reason Song’s skin care routine begins and ends with her diet; “I used to eat very unhealthy, have bad wellness habits, like not sleeping much, but now I know that they all tie in together,“ she says. “What you put inside your body matters as much as what you put on your skin.”
But of course… we still asked her all about her favourite products too. Here’s an inside look into Aimee Song’s beauty routine.
How do you prep your skin before makeup?
“I start with a toner, Biossance Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream ($89, Sephora), [and then] depending on the day I either use a serum or go straight into face cream. Then I use the Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil ($122, Sephora) and [lastly], sunscreen.”
What does your nighttime skin care routine look like?
“I double cleanse with an oil cleanser first, then foaming cleanser. If I’m wearing a lot of makeup, I exfoliate. Then I always use eye cream and a plant-derived retinol, like Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum ($112, Sephora), face cream, and then I use my rose oil [again].”
When levelling up for extra self-care or an at-home facial, Song says she’ll also add in a sheet mask and will “use a face roller”.
Are there any ingredient heroes you wish you’d known about sooner?
“Growing up in L.A. it’s hard not to be under the sun. I love sunscreen but I used to go surfing a lot and still have a lot of sunspots from being out in the water and under the sun. Vitamin C is definitely something I wish I used sooner.”
What’s the one skin treatment you always get before a big event?
“I don’t ever do any crazy facials right before a big event because if I try anything new, my sensitive skin tends to break out, so [instead] I just try to have a healthier diet. I’ll drink a giant glass of celery juice on an empty stomach, eat whole foods, and avoid junk food or my favourite sweets.”
If you’ve had a bad day, what’s the self-care ritual that’ll make it all better?
“Going on a walk with my dogs is the best way I let off steam. I also disconnect from my phone. I’ve realised that I need to be alone with my thoughts and learn to accept whatever is coming my way."
