How to choose the right unisex summer fragrance for you
Genderless scent is taking over this season
Unisex fragrances have officially become more popular than their gendered counterparts.
“The world may return to a preference for gendered fragrances, but for the foreseeable future, this is certainly not the case,” says Clayton Ilolahia, who serves as the Evaluation and Communications Manager at Fragrances of the World.
Instead, perfumers have become more inclined to launch universally wearable fragrances that “tend to tell stories that are about locations instead of people” or they make singular ingredients the focal point of their fragrance’s narrative, explains Ilolahia.
“Going genderless doesn’t mean you have to start wearing fragrances that smell completely different to what you have worn before [either],” he assures. “If anything, you might find the experience liberating because there are less rules or gender conforms.”
If you do want to expand your fragrance wardrobe to include unisex fragrances, Ilolahia suggests “looking at the fragrances you have worn and loved in the past — what do they have in common?”
As for selecting a unisex scent in summer? “Fragrance themes whether gendered or not tend to be lighter for summer,” Ilolahia explains.
Notes such as “fresh green notes, citrus zests, fruits like berries and tropical fruit, or marine notes that smell like fresh ocean mist” help to embody that summery ‘lightness’ that defies the boundaries of gendered scent.
