How to summer-proof your hair according to an expert
It's time to give your hair the TLC it deserves
There’s nothing quite like a summer vacay to reset your mind and rejuvenate your body. But, while you’re lapping up all that holiday goodness, keep in mind that increased sun, saltwater and chlorine exposure can wreak havoc on your strands.
If you'd like to minimise the impact of your holiday on your hair, read on. KMS Style Council Member and Wildlife Sogo Salon Co-Owner, Ali Holmes has shared all her best tips on summer-proofing your hair.
Give your locks a break, too
“Summer is the perfect time to give your hair a break Try the 'three day rule' - day one: hair out, day two: hair half up; and day three: hair in a sleek pony or bun. You prolong the time between washing your hair (gotta love that!) and give your hair a break from too many products or heat styling,” explains Ali.
Allowing your hair some extra breathing time between washes and putting down the heat-styling tools will not only save you time (read: more time spent reading a book by the pool) but will also promote healthier strands. That's a win/win if you ask us!
“Be sure to remember to double shampoo when you do wash your hair with this process to make sure you are giving your scalp a good clean and removing any buildup,” advises Ali.
Protect your hair when swimming
Giving your hair a solid dose of a protective leave-in treatment before swimming is a non-negotiable if you want to offset the effects of sun, chlorine and salty ocean water.
“Always use KMS Tamefrizz De-Frizz Oil before and after you swim,” recommends Ali. Some other options we like too are Sisley Hair Protective Fluid and Khlorane Protective Oil with Ylang-Ylang.
Level up your at-home hair treatments
A decent nourishing hair mask should be a non-negotiable in your hair regimen any time of the year but during the summer months, it becomes even more important - particularly if you're spending regularly in the water as saltwater and chlorine can strip moisture from the hair, causing it to dry out and become brittle.
“A once a week hydrating mask is an absolute must. Try KMS Tame Frizz Reconstructor,” says Ali. At the moment, we’re also loving Kevin Murphy’s Young Again Masque and BondiBoost’s Growth Miracle Mask.
