4 hair trends that are going to be HUGE this summer

Rihanna Summer Hair Trends 2019

The trending hairstyles that don’t require a chop or a new hair colour

Beauty Crew Beauty Writer / October 23 2019

We don’t know what it is, but there’s something about summer that makes you want to have new hair. And hey, after a long winter of dry strands, static hair and crazy-annoying wind, you’ve earned it.

And while we’re all for taking the leap and going for the chop, or experimenting with different hair colours, sometimes switching up your hair game can be as simple as styling your hair differently. Why not be brave and ditch the heat tools for your natural texture? Or shake things up with a throwback hair trend? We talked to Schwarzkopf Professional National Ambassador and hair stylist Dee Parker Attwood to find out the coolest hairstyles you need to try this summer. Get ready for some major inspo!

#1 / Natural texture

Take it from London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020 – it’s time to let your natural hair texture off the leash. “People are going away from ironing out their curls and ringlets,” says Parker Attwood. “We’re actually seeing a lot of this on the catwalk already, which is really encouraging people to embrace their natural texture. If you have curly hair, it’s all about letting it go and just defining what you’ve already got, maybe using a curling iron here and there, but really working with that natural texture rather than masking it.”

When it comes to styling your natural hair, Parker Attwood says less is more and to avoid over-styling or over-loading your curls with too many products. “This time around it’s all about keeping the fluffy, natural texture as opposed to that crunchy look. If your hair goes frizzy, then it’s likely dehydrated, so remember to keep it really well moisturised and hydrated.” Parker Attwood recommends applying a leave-in treatment like Schwarzkopf OSIS+ Tame Wild Anti-Frizz Cream to nourish your locks and prevent frizz.

If you have natural curls, it’s also a good idea to incorporate weekly hydrating masks into your hair care routine (we like Aveda Be Curly Intensive Detangling Masque).

Whatever your hair type, this is one wearable IRL trend we’re keen to get on board with. Just check out how good natural texture looks on Zendaya:

#2 / Ponytails

While ponytails have been trending for quite some time now, Parker Attwood says wearing your hair up has never been cooler. And we can totally see why. NYFW Spring 2020 delivered some seriously show-stopping ponytails and they were chic, stylish and anything but boring. The best part? Just about anybody can pull them off. From the ‘snatched’ high ponytail to the sleek low ponytail and the every-stylish braided version, there’s a million and one ways to spice it up.

Kendall Jenner

#3 / Topknots

Um, this could be the best news we’ve heard all year. Much to the happiness of lazy humans everywhere, Parker Attwood has confirmed that the beloved low-maintenance topknot is the next big summer hair trend. Keep your updo sleek and tight for a sophisticated look, or go for an imperfect, undone finish for that carefree ‘It’ girl vibe á la Rihanna. Head here for more ways to wear a topknot.

#4 / Tendrils

If you were a ‘90s kid, chances are you’ll remember leaving out two strategically placed face-framing tendrils off to the sides. Bonus points if you sprayed them with hairspray or flat ironed them (very Laguna Beach of you!). And as it turns out, the retro hair look is making quite the comeback this summer, with a number of A-listers rocking tendrils of their own (we’re looking at you Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid!). “I think tendrils are coming back,” says Parker Attwood. “Either the ones around the face or the ones around the top of the ear.” Cue applause.
