The celeb inspirations behind every wig and hairdo on 'Stranger Things'

The resemblance between Winona Ryder (our beloved Joyce Byers) and Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven was already uncanny, but Eleven's latest look definitely upped the ante. According to Hindsgaul, the character's season four style (which featured Bobby Brown's real hair with 'frizzier' extensions and faux bangs added in) was designed to look like Joyce cut it at the kitchen counter along with Jonathan and Will's (possibly to replicate the only style she knew how to do: her own).

Eddie, meet Eddie! "[Eddie Munson's hair] is based on Eddie Van Halen," confirmed Hindsgaul. "We had five [wig] fittings for Jo[seph Quinn, who plays Eddie]. I was nervous about actually cutting it short on top. It has movement. I love wigs, but I don't like wigs that sit like hats on people's heads. If you can't move, I'd rather not [use them]." And move it did! Munson's hair was basically a character all its own.

Another member of the gang who took inspo from the members of Van Halen? Mike Wheeler, whose grunge-y shag embraced the same body (and bangs) as Eddie's chop, just with a little (okay, a lot) less length. Dare we say Finn Wolfhard's onscreen counterpart is determined to end up looking like Hawkins' favourite Dungeon Master in the end? Come through season five!

The muse behind Steve Harrington's iconic mane? Morten Harket, the lead singer of '80s band A-ha (as well as both Brad Pitt and George Clooney in their volume-embracing teen years), Hindsgaul told Entertainment Weekly. It takes a special kind of man to make a mullet genuinely swoon-worthy, but Joe Keery's gorgeous face/Harrington's incredible babysitting abilities guarantee he's one of 'em.

Lucas Sinclair's sculptural style was actually inspired by those made famous by '80s hip-hop duo Kid 'n Play. To make sure it was in tip-top shape for every single scene, actor Caleb McLaughlin actually became the only actor with a personal on-set hairstylist: barber Tariq Nevar who coiffed it to perfection on the daily. "Caleb had a barber during that flattop because that had to be cut every day, pretty much," explained Hindsgaul.

Erica Sinclair's hair accessory game is as strong as her one-liners, and so it's no surprise she pulls her inspo from another iconic '80s little sister: The Cosby Show's Rudy Huxtable. In addition to a fondness for sass, the two also share a mutual appreciation of brightly-hued hair bobbles. They're bold, sure, but Priah Ferguson wears 'em like a pro.

Competing with 'King Steve' and his hair was no easy feat, and yet Billy Hargrove sure gave it a red hot (literally, he was smoking) go. Hargrove's look was heavily influenced by the infamous mullet embraced by '80s hearthrob Rob Lowe. "I looked at [actor Dacre Montgomery's] photo the first time it came in, with those big eyes, and [thought] 'he can pull that [type of cut] off'," Hindsgaul explained. "Very few people can pull that off and look good with it."

When she's not breaking a story or battling the latest beast to infiltrate town, Hawkins' own 'princess' Nancy Wheeler (played by the incredible Natalia Dyer) seems to be teaching a masterclass in 'how to genuinely pull off a perm'. As for who taught her, Hindsgaul confessed that Jennifer Beals' Flashdance character Alex Owens was a major reference.
