Did Sofia Richie Grainge just make concealer lips cool again?
Sofia Richie Grainge has become a cultural tastemaker in the last few years, but for the first time we’re questioning her judgement.
In a recent TikTok video, Richie Grainge dropped her favourite lip colour combo, which included two shades of lipstick and concealer. Yep, you read that right, she’s trying to revitalise the concealer lips trend of the ‘00s.
For anyone who’s too young to remember, concealer lips were a very popular lip makeup trend. It was especially beloved by high school students and members of the Jersey Shore cast.
The makeup technique aimed to cancel out any natural lip colour to create a uniform skin-coloured base, and at the time, we all thought we looked great and had finally found the perfect nude lip shade. But in reality, concealer lips flattened any potential plumpness and made our pouts look miniscule, dry and crusty.
In theory, concealer lips are the antithesis to the plush lip trends we’ve grown accustomed to in 2023, which is why we were so surprised to see Richie Grainge dab concealer onto her lips as the “cherry on top” of the lip combo she’s been “obsessed” with lately.
“I saw it on TikTok. It's a TikTok trend for pumpkin spice and I'm here for it,” she said in the video. First, she lightly dabbed the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Shine Candy Glaze Lipstick ($67 at Sephora) in shades 14 and 15 onto her lips. “They are absolutely stunning,” she explained in the clip. “They are so hydrating, they're so lightweight, [and] they're easy to carry around.”
“Last but not least, I'm gonna do the cherry on top, which is a tiny, tiny dot of concealer,” she said. “Just gonna put that right in the centre and you get this beautiful ombre lip combo.
