Looking for glossy, effortless tresses? Celeb stylist Michael Brennan dishes his top tips
If there’s one thing we love as beauty writers, it’s getting to chat with the experts. Asking them everything we can imagine to get them to spill their secrets. Which is why when given the chance to sit down with international celeb stylist Michael Brennan, we jumped at the chance. It’s all part of the job, right?
Brennan is notoriously good at making celeb strands look unbelievably luxe and seriously nourished, so obviously we had to ask him all about how he works with his clients to create said healthy, glossy strands. And when it comes to creating volume, Brennan knows a thing or two. His ultimate hair hack (and one of our own favourite salon styling moves) involves a good spritz of dry shampoo post-blow-dry to up the ‘volume’ ante.
Need more intel? Don’t worry, you’ll be boasting glossy effortless tresses in no time with Brennan’s styling secrets…
On Michael Brennan’s signature style:
When looking through Brennan’s portfolio there is such a vast range of beautifully styled strands, so we had to see if he had a ‘signature’ style he liked to create. Brennan described his style as “classic and timeless”, creating hair “that looks luxurious and well-nourished” and is a self-professed “Master of Texture”. We’ve got to give it to him, he really does bring out the best in all textures, creating “hair that moves well with effortless shine”.
To create this signature effortless style, Brennan credits a “good shampoo and conditioner to start” as playing a pivotal role in the look. But the real key is the HASK Argan Oil Repairing 5-in-1 Leave-in-Spray ($17 at HASK), a must-have in Brennan’s kit. The easy-to-spritz spray “not only conditions the hair but is great for detangling”, not to mention it “creates the perfect heat barrier for the hair [and even] controls frizz [while] locking in shine”.

If you could tell everyone in the world one thing about hair, what would it be?
It’s a big question, we know. But when we’ve got an expert on hand of course we’re going to get the goss to save your strands. For Brennan, he wants everyone to know that your “hair will benefit from using a deep conditioning repair mask” at least once or twice a week for the ultimate condition. The mask helps to not only “repair hair from heat damage and chemical processes but (it) also locks in moisture.”
Is there a major styling sin we’re all committing?
When it comes to styling (and caring for) our strands we like to think we’re pretty good at following the rules. But Brennan lets us know that’s not the case for most. “The major styling sin would be that we’re all not using heat protection and deep conditioning treatments enough.” To fight off frizz and damage Brennan suggests adding in these two steps as it “can make a big difference.”
How do you keep hair looking so glossy, silky and shiny?
When asked about how he gets his clients strands looking so healthy, he suggests that it’s the ‘in-between salon visits’ that are key. Using products that maintain hair like adding in a deep condition mask like HASK Argan Oil Deep Conditioning Treatment ($6 at HASK) at least once a week will be a “game-changer”.
When it comes to the one ingredient Brennan swears by, he has to give it to the strand-saving benefits of argan oil. Incorporating the ingredient into his styling routine helps to “lock in moisture, help repair damage and eliminate frizz”. Although he’s also a big believer in the brand-new HASK Repair Series – Repairing Weightless Hair Oil Mist. The reparative, weightless hair oil mist strengthens strands all while leaving behind an unbelievable glossy shine, he swears it’ll create a “fantastic shine that will last all day”, and honestly long-lasting shimmering strands are all we really want.
