The beauty trends set to take 2017 by storm
Are you already ahead of the curve?
If you’re one who likes to stay on top of the latest beauty trends, then we (and Pinterest) have some brilliant news for you. Recently, the website shared their annual 100 report, which predicts the top trends in a range of categories (food and drink, style, décor and of course, hair and beauty) that are likely to emerge in the coming year.
The report uses the save and search activity of Pinterest users over the past 12 months to determine what’s popular and make predictions about upcoming trends. In total, beauty searches exceeded four billion pins and is considered one of the most highly searched categories on Pinterest.
If you’re as curious as we were about the predicted hair and makeup trends we’ll be experimenting with this year, then check out the top six highlights from the report.
#1 / Chrome nails
The trend for futuristic manicures run rampant across social media last year. From sunglass nails to Gigi Hadid’s pricey Met Gala talons, everyone was looking for some seriously reflective mani inspiration in 2016. So much so that engagement on Pinterest surrounding the trend grew by 570 per cent with searches and pins increasing by 50 per cent every month since June last year.
#2 / Charcoal masks
It turns out Kylie Jenner isn’t the only one to jump on the charcoal face mask bandwagon as searches for the purifying skin care treatment rose by a huge 333 per cent in 2016. If you’re looking to try a charcoal mask for yourself, we recommend Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque, L’Oréal Paris Pure Clay Detoxifying and Brightening Charcoal Mask, or Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque.
#3 / Microblading
There is no denying that eyebrows are in. Still. We need only to look to every red carpet event, magazine cover, and YouTube tutorial to see that bushy brows are the makeup trend of the moment. And this was reflected in Pinterest searches too, as pins relating to microblading (a less permanent and painful version of eyebrow tattooing) rose by 255 per cent in the past year.
#4 / No-heat hairstyles
It turns out Pinterest searchers want to know how to reduce damage caused by heat styling tools just as much as we do. The search for natural hairstyles and styling techniques increased by 35 per cent in 2016. Additionally searches for shag haircuts increased by 188 per cent, signaling a desire for hassle-free, low-maintenance ‘dos.
#5 / Cut-crease eye makeup
As quickly as nude and natural makeup rose in popularity in 2016, so too did the more precise and striking cut-crease eye makeup trend that helps define your crease to lift eyes and make them appear more open. Searches for the look increased by 138 per cent in the last year. While eyeshadows are typically the product tasked to create a defined cut-crease, pencil eyeliners can be used to add intensity and drama to the look. To ensure the look doesn't end up too harsh, simply apply a thin line of pencil liner where you'd like your crease to sit and blend it softly up towards the brow bone, creating a soft focus effect. If you're on the lookout for a new pencil eyeliner to try, we'd recommend Estée Lauder Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner, Rimmel London Scandaleyes Waterproof Eyeliner and Charlotte Tilbury Rock 'N' Kohl.
#6 / Jojoba oil
In recent years, it’s been highlighters and strobing techniques that have been tasked with creating a luminous glow on our skin and while we’re not looking to ditch our favourite highlighters anytime soon, it is facial oils that are well on their way to becoming the new go-to for creating a radiant and lit-from-within glow. The oil that’s trending right now is jojoba oil, which has swiftly gained popularity with searches for the golden hydrating elixir increasing by 30 per cent on the social media platform in 2016.
Love facial oils but tend to steer clear of them during summer? Find out why you could be doing your skin a disservice.
