The constant battle between indoor heating and outdoor wind and rain, plus a whole bunch of beanie-wearing can leave your hair looking worse for wear. We spoke with Lucie Doughty, Global Editorial Director of Paul Mitchell, for her top tips on keeping your hair healthy and in shape when it’s cold outside.

1

Spritz it

Repeated rinsing with hot water followed by the hair dryer can seriously damage your ‘do, so try limit how often you’re washing your hair. Extend the life of your wash by refreshing the roots and getting rid of excess oil with a dry shampoo (we like Batiste Dry Shampoo in Marrakech) . “It helps to cleanse oils away from the scalp, and allow your blow-dry to last longer,” says Doughty.

2

Wash it

Guard your hair against moisture loss when you’re washing it with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Doherty recommends a formula with awapuhi - an extract sourced from white ginger. “This ingredient helps to balance moisture in the hair, hydrating moisture-starved strands, making hair shiny and manageable.” Try: Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Moisturizing Lather Shampoo.

TOP TIP: A person with oily hair should avoid over-stimulating the scalp with excessive shampooing.

3

Dry it

When you’re drying your hair, avoid rubbing vigorously with your towel - this will only cause you hair cuticle to break, and create frizz in the long run. Instead, “use a kitchen paper towel to squeeze the water out from your roots to tips - it’s much gentler this way”.

4

Protect it

Hate the sight of those short little hairs caught around your round brush when blow-drying? Decrease the chance of snapping and flyaways by apply a heat-protectant before you get your hands on the hairdryer. Kérastase Créme de la Créme works well in this case.

5

Colour it

If your hair is still looking dull, try an ammonia-free demi-permanent (a less permanent formulation than a semi) in-salon colour to bring your hair back to life. “This will add a much-needed gloss and shine to get you through the winter months,” says Doughty.
