4 runway hairstyles to add to your repertoire

Models may have a team of hair stylists at the ready backstage to whip their tresses into shape, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get their look yourself at home. Here are our favourite hairstyles from the Spring/Summer 2016 shows, plus tips on how to take them from the runway to real life.

Undone Updo

The loose updo is a clever way to make frizz fashionable.

Get the look: For the boho style seen at Alberta Ferretti, mist damp hair with sea salt spray and blow-dry with your hands. “Make a side part, then create three loose ponytails at the back of the head – two on the heavier side of the part, and one on the other side,” says Syfu. Now add any decorative bands at the end of the ponytails. Next, pull a section of hair free along the hairline and create another loose ponytail, adding the lengths from one of the lower ponies. Continue around the hairline, tucking ends under with pins.

Pro tip: “You can embellish with just about anything, so stop by a fabric or trimmings shop for inspiration,” says Syfu.

Decorative Accents

Nothing elevates a simple updo 
quite like a little hair dressing.


Get the look: Chanel’s style really 
is as easy as it looks; on straight hair, “create a centre part, gather lengths 
at the nape of the neck and create a ponytail”, explains TRESemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu. Spritz with a finishing spray, then place two headbands on the crown of the head, about 3cm apart.

Pro tip: “Hair needs to look in great condition,” says Syfu, who advises using mousse on dry hair and blow-drying smooth.

New Retro Waves

This faintly 1980s style looks both effortless and really cool.

Get the look: Apply mousse on damp hair, from hairline to ends, and blow-dry back away from the face using your hands. “When hair is completely dry, spritz flexible hairspray at the roots and around the face, and use your hands to sculpt the front and push hair back behind the ears,” says Syfu. “Take the lengths of the hair on both sides and loosely twist back and pin, releasing after 10-15 minutes for natural movement.”

Pro tip: “Hands are your best tools for this look – it keeps everything modern and undone,” explains Syfu.

Twisted Tresses

This simple technique is a new take on the braid – and a fun upgrade to simple hairstyles.

Get the look: The ponytail at J.W. Anderson looks equally great on dry or wet-look hair; to get the gelled style seen here, Syfu suggests applying strong-hold gel on dry strands and brushing through evenly. “Scrape hair back into a sleek ponytail and secure tightly at the back of the head, in line with your ears,” she says. “Separate the tail in two sections and twist around each other, fastening at the ends with a clear hair tie.”

Pro tip: “You need sleek hair, so mist hairspray onto a [clean] toothbrush and smooth down and fly-aways,” advises Syfu.
