Too easy tricks to be better groomed in no time
You may have the basics of men’s grooming down pat, like cleansing your face day and night and putting on a moisturiser with an SPF daily, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. If you're ready to take your grooming routine to the next level, and learn some more helpful hints then listen up. Follow these six simple (and easy) tweaks to up your grooming game.
1
Don’t overdo the shampoo
“Over-shampooing not only dries the scalp but gives hair a dry texture and creates static,” says leading hair stylist Julianne McGuigan. Wash hair every three days with a good quality shampoo and conditioner – unless you’re sweating it out in the gym, in which case you’ll need to wash post-workout.
2
Tend to your eyes
All those days you forgot to wear sunnies and SPF will show up around your eyes, says Emma Hobson, education manager for the International Dermal Institute. “To erase the past and tell a new story, apply a daily dose of peptides and vitamins at bed time,” says Hobson. “It will brighten and firm the skin, minimise lines and stimulate collagen.”
3
Master your beard shape
Trim the trickier outer edge of your beard first for better visibility. “Start at the ears and work your way towards the chin to set the shape and create a defined edge,” says mensbiz.com.au grooming expert Emma Stuart. “Trim any hair below your Adam’s apple, then fade one inch above it for a more natural look.” Finally, finish off with the cheeks and jawline.
4
Don’t cut corners (of your nails)
Well-kept nails are an easy DIY job if you use the right tools and technique. “Don’t cut the nail back too close to the skin,” says Stuart. “Otherwise it can cause ingrown nails or infections.” Trim the nail straight across – not at an angle – before smoothing out the edges with a nail file.
5
Find the right fragrance
Have at least two fragrances in your kit: a fresh aromatic for the office and a more complex scent for evening. “Spray the fresh cologne in your hands and rub onto the neck,” says Dimitri Weber, training manager for Cosmax Fragrance. Spray your evening scent straight onto your chest – three squirts max.
Try: Paco Rabanne Invictus for day; Burberry Mr Burberry for night.
6
Flash those pearly whites
Smile – women who want long-term love are more attracted to men who smile, according to studies by the University of Oslo and Senshu University.
