Learning how to curl with a straightener is no easy feat, so if you’ve already managed to claim one curled style as a victory, you’re ahead of the pack.
But what if we told you the traditional type of curl you usually craft is just one in a whole library of chic styles that could be yours. With a few flicks of the wrist and a quality tool like the impressive Dyson Corrale™, everything from waves to blow-dry-esque bends can be achieved – no extra pair of hands or wand needed.
Using the Dyson Corrale™ – which has cordless functionality and flexing plates to help make curling a breeze – we’ve put together straightener step-by-steps for three curl styles you’re going to want to add to your repertoire ASAP.
S-Wave
The glamorous S-wave follows the shape of the letter it’s named after. The best thing about this style is that it can be done on all hair lengths, as the hair doesn’t need to wrap around the straightener; the technique comes down to placement of the hair and a clamping motion.
1
Prep
Section the hair into top and bottom.
2
Make your 'S' shape
Feed each section of hair through the straightener in an ‘S’ shape with one hand, pushing upwards to create the bends. As the hair feeds through the Corrale™, clamp down at each bend to administer heat and seal the shape. The cordless capabilities of the Corrale™ make it easier to manoeuvre this style solo, with weight-controlled balance and better visibility (i.e. no cord blocking your view of the mirror!).
Top tip: When selecting a section for each S-wave, aim for a thin but wide segment. Think little amounts of hair, but approximately 3-4 cm width.
3
Repeat
Repeat for each section, making sure each S-wave is created in the same direction. Allow the waves to cool before moving on to your top section and then repeat.
4
Finishing touches
Zjoosh each section to blend together and add a spritz of hairspray to help the style hold.
C-Curl
The C-Curl allows you to get that ‘I just had a blow-dry’ look without hitting the salon. Curling in towards the ends, the ‘C’ shape refers to the slight curve that creates a polished finish and the illusion of more volume.
1
Prep
Blow-dry hair straight using the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer, focusing on the roots for volume.
2
Set your temperature
Once hair is completely dry, select your preferred temperature on the Dyson Corrale™. It has three settings (165°, 185°, 210°) and an intelligent heat control system that ensures it never exceeds the set temperature. For this style, we used the lowest setting at 165º to emulate a soft, polished blow-dry. The Corrale™ has flexible plates that allow for enhanced styling at a lower temperature, resulting in less hair damage¹.
3
Create your curl
To create the C-curl, section your hair (top and bottom). Then section by section, glide the Corrale™ downwards, rotating 45 degrees inwards as you get to the final two inches of length.
4
Set and shape
Repeat with the top section of your hair, leaving curls to cool. Once style is set, tousle and shape slightly with your hands, but don’t brush through.
Mermaid waves
Mermaid waves are huge right now, with the tight bends reminiscent of rippled water (how very Ariel) and the crimping phase of the ‘80s. You don’t need a separate tool to create this style, just the right technique.
1
Prep
Section the hair into four parts. Smaller sections are key with this style to create a tighter wave.
2
Start your waves
Selecting a two cm section, clamp the Dyson Corrale™ near the roots, where you want the curls to start. Rather than gliding straight downwards like you would when straightening, rotate the Corrale™ 180 degrees inwards, and then outwards again turning back 180 degrees, as you make your way towards the ends. It will feel as though you are creating a zigzag shape with your wrist.
3
Repeat
Repeat this movement in your small two centimetre sections, giving each curl plenty of time to cool.
4
Finishing touches
Once the entire of your hair has been curled and cooled, brush your fingers through to blend the sections together.
1 Thermal damage measured by hair strength, when creating an equivalent straight style using minimal heat. Tested on flexing vs solid plates.
