What you need to know about this ingredient
Apple cider vinegar has been one of the biggest buzzwords in the last year. Why? Not only is it incredibly versatile in the kitchen as an ingredient for a tasty salad dressing or marinade for meats, but it also boasts a heap of health benefits for your body. Gina Burn, Blackmores’ naturopath, tells all.
The benefits of apple cider vinegar
Made with apple must or cider, apple cider vinegar delivers a surprising number of perks. “Apple cider vinegar’s three to four week fermentation process creates a compound called acetic acid, which is the main active nutrient that delivers so many healing qualities,” says Burn. “This includes relieving heartburn, preventing acid reflux, healing food and breathing allergies, increasing metabolic rate, burning fat, suppressing appetite, getting rid of colds and coughs, overcoming muscle cramps and lowering blood sugar levels.”
The best way to consume apple cider vinegar
Avoid taking it as a shot, and go for this approach instead: “The best way to take apple cider vinegar is to use two or three teaspoons in a glass of water before meals,” says Burn. “Or, if that’s not your idea of a pre-dinner drink, then you can definitely add it to a salad dressing. Sometimes the taste is too bitter so it is encouraged to dilute it down.”
Other ways to use apple cider vinegar
If diluting apple cider vinegar in water isn’t to your taste, you could try this method: “Apple cider vinegar is so versatile and can be used in a number of great recipes,” explains Burn. “It is popular in salad dressings, homemade tomato sauces, chicken marinades, and can even be used to wash vegetables.”
