The beauty tips beauty editors swear by

Advice from those who know best

Beauty Crew Beauty Editor / February 14 2025

Beauty editors have unique insider access to the beauty world.

We know all the best hair, nail, skin, makeup, and brow trends to try in 2025, as well as, the worst beauty trends we wish we could all collectively forget as a society.

We road test new skin care, are the first to experience facials that leave you with glass skin, work out 'for scientific purposes', ask celebrity makeup artists for blush tips, get Rupaul's Drag Race contestants to divulge their beauty essentials, and speak to product formulators about developing new products.

Naturally, throughout our careers, we've picked up a trick or two along the way — here, BEAUTYcrew dishes on their best beauty tips.

1/ Mist your hairbrush with perfume

"I’m a diehard fan of a hairbrush doused in hair mist, a trusty trick for combining your scent application and blowout-brushing steps," Delaney Loane, BEAUTYcrew's Editor, says. "Okay, 'doused' might be a touch dramatic, but a single spritz after cleaning your hairbrush (a non-negotiable monthly step if you ask me) works wonders for adding a subtle aroma to your hair with every swipe."

"Consider it the kind of perfume application technique that’ll wash over passers-by gently, instead of smacking them in the face with scent," she explains.

You'll need: Denman's Natural Bristle Single Nylon Quill Medium Grooming Brush ($43.95 from Adore Beauty) and Dior's Miss Dior ($130 from Adore Beauty)

2/ A basic 3-step skin care routine is all you need

If there's one thing the BEAUTYcrew team can agree on, it's that 10-step skin care routines are excessive and unnecessary.

"I’m gonna hold your hand when I say this: viral skin care products are a scam," warns BEAUTYcrew's Social Editor, Georgia Nelson.

"As someone who makes TikToks for a living, I know how tempting it is to jump on every viral beauty trend — especially when it comes to hyped skin care brands. But the whole point of a skin care routine is to find one that works for you, and that’s not always going to be the most viral or most luxurious product on the market," she explains. "Plus, the more products in your routine, the higher the chance that the active ingredients are actually clashing instead of working together, which can be worse for your skin."

"We’ve all become seriously accustomed to the 10-step skin care routine, and as much as all those products and ingredients work their magic for glowing dewy skin, some days it’s all too much," BEAUTYcrew's Content Producer, Emma Allcock, reiterates.

"My advice? Strip your routine right back to the basics: a cleanser or two (oil cleansers are a must IMO), a serum with active ingredients to target your skin concerns, and moisturiser," Nelson continues. "That way, you can splurge where needed on your favourite serum or cream without feeling guilty because you’ve got a solid skin care routine that actually delivers results."

You'll need: CeraVe's Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser ($21.99 from Chemist Warehouse), The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide + HA Serum ($29.90 from Priceline), and the Daily Skincare Brighten & Boost Day Cream ($27.99 from Priceline).

3/ Customise your hair care routine

BEAUTYcrew's Content Producer, Emma Allcock, was left feeling inspired after hearing Blake Lively ditched conditioner 20 years ago, and it changed her strands for the better.

"It turns out hair stylists in the know have been recommending it for years, so when I was told to try it out by a pro, I couldn’t resist," she explains. "And no, it doesn’t mean my dry ends have become even more brittle — it's actually the opposite."

She still uses a tiny dollop of conditioner at the roots of her hair, but her lengths and ends are now slathered in a healthy helping of hair mask.

"Yep, it feels luxurious, and my strands are thanking me for it,” she admits.

You'll need: Limitless R2 Reconstructive Repair Conditioner ($24.95 from AMR Hair & Beauty) and Limitless R3 Rapid Recovery Mask ($27.95 from AMR Hair & Beauty).

4/ Don't get overwhelmed by makeup trends

"I used to be the kind of person who was always experimenting with new makeup and makeup trends, but eventually I just felt burnt out by the whole experience. It also took the enjoyment out of the process for me," admits BEAUTYcrew's Beauty Editor, Briar Clark.

"As amazing as it is that we’re exposed to so many new makeup techniques and trends all the time — if you find something that works for you — stick with it," she says. "For me, that means my makeup routine consists of about five steps, so I don’t feel overwhelmed in the morning."

"I only apply a small amount of a sheer concealer under my eyes and around my nose," she continues. "I buff a bright shade of blush onto the parts of my cheeks where I naturally flush, a sheer liquid bronzer where the sun naturally hits my face, and a balmy highlighter on the high points of my face. Then I brush my brows into place, and pop on my lippy for the day. Easy."

You'll need: Revlon's Illuminance Serum Concealer ($29.95 from Priceline), Glossier's Cloud Paint ($41 from Glossier), and Chanel's Baume Essential Multi-Use Glow Stick ($74 from MYER).

5/ Map out the shape of your winged eyeliner

"A cat-eye is part of my everyday makeup look, so I’ve done enough liner legwork to discover what does and doesn’t make things easier," says Delaney Loane, BEAUTYcrew’s Editor.

"If you’re overwhelmed by the art (it’s an art, okay?!) of applying winged liner, I cannot recommend the mapping technique enough," she explains. "By mapping out the outer shape of your wing first, you’re able to simply go back and 'colour in' — once you’re happy with how it’s looking."

"Plus, if you accidentally go rogue, a thin border is far easier to seamlessly wipe away than a full-fledged, filled-in flick gone wrong," she jokes.

You'll need: Rimmel Glam Eyes Professional Liquid Eyeliner ($7.47 from Chemist Warehouse).

6/ Don’t underestimate the power of a good facial

"I know they can be expensive, but they’re most definitely a worthwhile investment if you’re on a healthy skin journey or just looking to maintain your glow, says Georgia Nelson, BEAUTYcrew’s Social Editor.

"Not all facials are created equal though, so look for one that incorporates hydration with some sort of peel and in-clinic tools (like an LED light or microdermabrasion) — always ask for a consult first to ensure your treatment aligns with your skin goals," she advises.

"I promise it’s one of the best investments you’ll ever make for your skin  plus, who doesn’t love a bit of me time?"

BEAUTYcrew recommends: The Skin Bar or Fayshell.

7/ Protect your skin with sun smart behaviours

"If there's one step I never miss in my daily beauty routine, it's sun protection", says BEAUTYcrew's Editor, Delaney Loane. "I take it super seriously (as we all need to). I always ensure I've got three forms of sun protection on my side (think SPF50+, a hat, and protective clothing). I'm also devoted to steering my walking route into the shade wherever humanly possible".

"Whenever I find myself thinking 'wow, they have really good skin' about someone, and I take the chance to quiz them on their habits, they always mention being very committed to their sun protection routine. And they're generally reaping all the visible anti-ageing benefits of said commitment. The lesson here? Let's all follow suit. It's important to do the legwork to find a sunscreen you love: the feel, the finish, everything. Then you'll want to apply it, all over, all the time."

It's time we stopped normalising a suntan, 2 in 3 Australians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Skin cancer, let's end the trend. Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide.

8/ Potent active ingredients aren't for everyone

"Forget retinol, vitamin C, and strong chemical exfoliants," says BEAUTYcrew's Beauty Editor, Briar Clark.

"My skin looks more youthful and plump the more I hydrate it, which is why I love using ingredients like hyaluronic acid, panthenol, ceramides, squalane, peptides, and antioxidants in my routine," she explains. "As someone with dry skin I still like chemical exfoliants, I just try to opt for gentle alternatives like PHAs and LHAs where possible."

You'll need: Sulwhasoo's First Care Activating Serum ($119 from Adore Beauty), Medik8's Hydr8 B5 Intense ($115 from Adore Beauty), and The Ordinary's GF 15% Solution ($26.90 from Adore Beauty).

Briar Clark got her start in the media industry in 2017, as an intern for Marie Claire and InStyle. Since then, her keen interest in fashion and beauty has landed her gigs as a Digital Content Producer and Beauty Editor with titles like Girlfriend, Refinery29, BEAUTYcrew and beautyheaven. She loves the way seemingly innocuous topics like skin care and style have the ability to put a smile on people’s faces or make them think about themselves a little differently. A big believer in self love and experimentation, Briar has made a point of becoming the Australian beauty industry’s unofficial guinea pig for unusual treatments and daring hair trends. When she’s not testing out the latest beauty launches, Briar is big on broadening her horizons, mostly in the form of food but she’s also partial to travelling to new destinations both near and far (and of course, allocating an extra bag to bring their best beauty offerings home with her).
