Plus, she reveals the high-tech treatment she swears by
Natalie Bassingthwaighte is as beautiful as she is talented. After years of starring on Neighbours, singing in both pop band Rouge Traders and as a solo artist, mentoring contestants on X Factor Australia and launching her own children’s fashion label Chi Khi, Nat Bass has now delved into the world of beauty by teaming up with non-invasive, non-surgical face lift treatment, Ultherapy. In our exclusive interview, the Australian beauty discusses why she aligned herself with the anti-ageing treatment, plus she reveals her favourite beauty products and the advice she’d tell her 15-year-old self.
On why she chose to partner up with Ultherapy…
“I never choose to work with a brand unless I really love the product, the brand and the company. There are a lot of things [where] I’ve said ‘no that’s not right for me’, but having turned 43 this year and when they said it’s a non-surgical face lift that tightens, produces more collagen and is natural and non-invasive, I thought ‘oh, I’ll give that a go, thank you very much’. I met the team as well and it’s a company that’s been around for 110 years; a family-owned company – that was really beautiful to me – I think it says a lot about your company and the morale of your team. So, all of that was really thrilling, but I wanted to know that it worked so I tried it and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever used anything that does exactly what it says it does. It does tighten, it does lift and I’ve started to get a glow from it as well. You can have it done on your lunch break – there’s no downtime – so that was a bonus for me that I wasn’t going to walk around with a red lasered face. It’s a slow sort of build so you don’t walk out looking like you’ve had a face lift or anything. I’m at the two-month mark and I’m just starting to see the lift and tightening. It’s all starting to happen and it’s really exciting.”
On the areas she’s had treated…
“I did everything. You can get just eyebrows or cheeks or jaw, but I ended up doing my whole face and under my chin as well. Because there are a lot of fake machines on the market, you need to go to a professional. [Ultherapy] have this technology [that] enables you to see which layers of the skin they’re pinpointing. The ultrasound stimulates collagen and it goes right to the lower layer of the skin - the foundation layer. That layer is the same one that would be pulled up if you were to have a face lift: I thought that was fascinating.”
On the results she’s noticed…
“I’ve definitely noticed the most change under my chin, but in general, I feel fresher and I feel younger without looking silly. I think at 43 you don’t want to get so much work done that you end up looking 63 while trying to look 20 – I just think that’s a horrible look. I’ve always preferred having some treatments that are going to make you look fresher and feel younger but not look silly.”
On her go-to makeup products…
“For makeup, I use foundation from Ellis Faas and I’ve been using that for probably two years and I still really love it. I also use Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara. I’ve used the Yves Saint Laurent Touché Eclat for about 15 years – I absolutely love it. Lipstick-wise, I just wear something natural – something glossy and not too fancy. I love this Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad in Cocoa Mirage and NARS Eyeshadow in Galapagos. It’s a bit punchier and more suitable for nighttime, as it has a touch of glitter in it.”
On her five-minute makeup routine…
“I’m so fast at doing my makeup. If I’m going out at night I can do a full face including eye makeup in 10 minutes. So, in five minutes I can wash my face and apply all my serums, and if I’m heading out the door I put on a little bit of foundation and a bit of mascara and that’s it. If you were to give me another 10 minutes, then my hair would be done and I’d be out the door. When my husband complains that I’m taking too long, I’m just like ‘babe, it’s been 10 minutes, you should see how long it takes my friends to get ready’.”
On the four products she can’t live without…
“I’d need a cleanser, because I need to make sure my face is prepped for other products, so that would be number one. A sunscreen or moisturiser would be number two and then [I] need a little bit of foundation and mascara and that’s it!”
On the top beauty tips she’s learned over the years…
“What I’ve learnt over the years is that the texture of your skin is everything. So, if you can look after that, you can make your face look great. You want it to be as hydrated as possible and a lot of that is so basic. For instance, my husband drinks two litres of water a day and his skin is amazing. It’s that simple. But as far as beauty goes, contouring has been the big winner of the last five years. I think some people go overboard and they can look a bit ridiculous, but you can do really amazing things with contouring. Also remember, good eyebrows are essential – so spend money to get good eyebrows.”
On the beauty advice she’d give her 15-year-old self…
“Less is more, clean your face at nighttime, drink lots of water and sleep. It’s often the simplest things. You don’t need lots of makeup and you don’t need to be anyone you’re not. Be true to yourself.”
