There’s a new type of foundation brush on the block
Could we be moving on from the humble makeup sponge?
Could we be moving on from the humble makeup sponge?
In the ever-growing market of foundation blending tools, it would be easy to feel overwhelmed by the myriad of options. From the original flat foundation brushes and sponges to the newcomers like buffing brushes, the iconic beautyblender and even that wacky translucent SiliSponge, there is no shortage of choices when it comes to creating a flawless base.
The latest tool making the rounds is probably one of the more interesting ones we’ve seen, and if the social media pictures, comments, and videos are anything to go by, this new type of blending tool is definitely worth your attention.
Behold, the new generation of makeup brushes. This unusually shaped set of brushes, originally released by the brand Artis, more closely resembles those old-school hairbrushes than the makeup brushes we’re used to seeing.
So what’s the deal with this design? The oval brush is intended to glide over your face, and seamlessly blend your makeup with very little effort due the fine, soft bristles. A huge selling point of the product – especially if your go-to application method is a sponge, is that it is said to retain much less product than a sponge, meaning you waste less precious foundation in the application process. Artis have also created a specialised cleaning pad for the brushes, which can be purchased separately.
Given the popularity of this innovative design with beauty bloggers and on social media, it’s not surprising to see that there have been other brands following suit and releasing their own versions of the brushes, including these colourful Moda Prismatic Pro makeup brushes. The brushes feature the same hairbrush shape concept, but have a bit more of a fun and festive design compared to the Artis brushes.
While these colourful brushes are not yet available in Australia, the original Artis 10-piece set is available on the Artis website. Other options include the Oval 3 or Oval 6 Brushes from MAC and By Terry has a Soft Oval Expert Brush available through MECCA.
We’re predicting this is only the beginning for this style of makeup brush, so we’ll be keeping a close eye out for budget options as they hit our shores (which we’re sure will be happening sooner rather than later).
If you want to see the brushes in action, you’ll find it pretty easy to find some tutorials online as beauty bloggers around the world (including Kylie Jenner, who swears by the Oval 6 brush for applying her moisturiser) have jumped at the chance to try these unique brushes and share their opinions. You can also check out this video of Australian beauty vlogger Chloe Morello experimenting with the Artis range, showing what each size brush can be used for.
Now you’ve got all the information on the tools you need to create a flawless base, here’s how to never choose the wrong shade of foundation ever again.
