Orlando Pita’s tips for toughening up your hair look

TRESemmé’s NYFW Hair Director shares how to ‘unprettify’ your do

Sometimes we don’t want our hair to look pretty. Not in the way that we want it to look messy, dirty or somewhat resembling a bird’s nest, but more that the look of soft curls or glossy waves just don’t work for the overall finish we’re going for when factoring in makeup and outfit.

So how do you toughen up and add some edge to your style without going too tomboy or masculine? Well, Orlando Pita, TRESemmé Hair Director for New York Fashion Week, did exactly that for the Monse show, but instead of picking one style for all of the models, he created bespoke hairstyles depending on what each girl brought to the table.

“We’re creating a look that has a certain toughness without making a hairstyle that makes anyone uniformly tough,” he said of his inspiration.

“It’s about making a strong, confident woman.”

Orlando shares his tips (and we weigh in with some of our own) on how you can add some rock ‘n roll cool to your own hairstyle.

Your part

As Orlando says, “A middle part can add toughness to a look,” but it also depends on your hair length.

Parting straight down the centre can work to add an element of cool to those with longer hair, while those with above-the-shoulder length should try a side part. Switch it around, and Orlanda says the result may be a bit too pretty.

TOP TIP: If your hair is already dry and you want to change your part, apply some mousse to dampen your hair while adding texture, then reset your part and dry off.

Add texture (or keep it!)

If your hair is silky smooth and straight, give it some grit by applying a golf-ball sized amount of mousse. Comb it through and dry it off for a finish that’s got a little movement but isn’t stiff.

Use: TRESemmé Perfectly (Un)Done Sea Foam for a finish that’s textured but still soft to-the-touch.

If your hair is naturally curly, Orlando suggest keeping it as is, but using a straightener at the roots so your hair doesn’t sit as high.

Let your hair fall in your face

Those with shorter hair or fringes should opt for a deep side part that will let their hair fall in their face for an element of edginess that adds confidence and an ‘I don’t care’ attitude.

Pull it back

Orlando says that showing your ears and neck can instantly toughen up your look. So, think: sleek ponytails, buns, and even a slicked-back wet look if you’re up for it.

Use: TRESemmé Perfectly (Un) Done Ultra Brushable Hairspray for control and hold that still has movement.

TOP TIP: Keep your hairspray light. Orlando suggest not using too much – just enough to keep your hair slicked down.

A blunt cut

If adding edge to your look isn’t just a temporary thing for you, we suggest you ask your hairdresser to cut your ends straight and blunt. Whether worn curly, wavy or straight, the literal edge of your cut will give you instant toughness.
