The L’Oréal Paris ambassador (and new mum) talks frizzy hair, fragrance and her favourite way to spoil herself
From on-screen to red carpet events or simply staying at home with her daughter, James, Blake Lively always looks stunning. She shares her top beauty secrets to looking gorgeous while keeping her routine as low-key as possible.
Her skin care tips
The idea of weekly facials sounds good to some, but I’d rather spend that time with friends and family. I don’t rely on professional skin maintenance. In winter, I focus on hydration, in summer, I go with lighter moisturisers, and regardless of the season, I am always focused on sun protection.
Her hair secrets
My hair changes depending on where I am. If I’m someplace very humid, it can get a little frizzy and big, so I need something to calm it down, but when I’m home in New York, what I really want is volume since I like to wear my hair loose. L’Oréal Paris Elvive Fibralogy shampoo and conditioner make it look like I spent a lot of time on my hair when really, I probably just put it in a ballerina bun and let it air-dry.
Her secret hair weapon
Sometimes I rub coconut oil on the ends before shampoo. It’s great in winter when the air can be dry. I don’t spend hours at the salon; I do, of course, get haircuts, but I don’t go every six weeks.
Her go-to scents
I love scents that are both masculine and feminine. I used to experiment and mix perfume with cologne, but now I wear Gucci Première [Lively is the face of the scent]. The woody notes give it masculinity, but the citrus and floral notes give it a hint of femininity.
Her best beauty tip
The makeup artists I work with most often know me really well. They always have great tips I can use at home, like adding a tiny pop of turquoise on the inner rim of my eyes to make them stand out. It always works!
Her favourite makeup look
I tend to make my statements in fashion rather than beauty. My favourite makeup look is something that has an effortless and deconstructed look – dewy skin, a neutral eye palette with mascara, and a glossy nude or pink lip.
Her beauty indulgence
While I don’t have time to get them regularly, I love a good manicure and pedicure. I like something super neutral, or darker and bolder. If it’s a special occasion like [Christmas], I go with a little sparkle.
Blake’s other guilty pleasures
These days I feel like I’m spending more time buying home items than fashion! Rugs, lamps, kitchen knick-knacks ... you name it. My indulgences are mostly food-related. Chocolate, dark chocolate, ice-cream sundaes – I have a sweet tooth. I love to bake for other people, but I also enjoy just baking for myself.
